Misfire, fuel delivery, timing?
After I put a spare starter in the beetle I had weeks of confidence knowing that she'd start up everytime. However it wouldn't idle on it's own till warmed up, so I started futzing around... I left the key in the on position for what must've been like 30 minutes. I didn't know it until I touched the aftermarket black coil and almost melted my finger off! Wouldn't fire up. Had to let it cool down, then fired up and headed to get some fresh gas and off to band practice. I instantly noticed what seemed to be a fuel delivery or firing issue, always missing. Not so bad at around 35mph, but when getting up and going, bog down, misfire, and backfire!
Babied it to SE Foster, new fuel lines and filter. Runs A LITTLE better, but same thing, and hills are a bad thing, creeping up with no power...
Right now I've gotta get some studying in before a class presentation, then I'll have some time afterwards to take a look at it. Gonna have to take the back roads though, not quite highway road worthy yet.
Maybe my brand new points are burnt, damaged coil? Always something. As a matter of fact I think I'll post this in the Type 1 forum...

Yeah I think you fried your points. Pop the cap and take a look.
30 mins is a long time. You may need to replace the condenser and coil too...but try the points first.

File and gap the points. Still misfiring? New coil. Old coils melt the insulation off their windings.Maz804 wrote:What do fried points look like? I checked yesterday and the surfaces were flat but very discolored, like they got heated up... hot like... iz thatit?

Swapped points with new ones and still runs like shat. Swapped coils with my bus and now it runs great! Static timed but still need to dial in my carb... idle is hard to maintain.

Starts right up, runs fine but stalls out after 10 minutes of driving... GRRR! I think I ran outta gas too on the way to school for my final exam driving up a steep hill. The gauge is WAY off! Would a new fuel sending unit fix that or could it be the gauge itself? IS it adjustable?
Took the Shoe-Leather-Express and made it to class just in time though!

So the air mixture screw turns all on it's own with the rhythm and shakes of the motor... about 3 turns out from zero all the way in it ran like a dream all the way home! I'm gonna pull it out and see if it's missing the black o-ring. Should the o-ring be replaced if it's there? Or should a put some locktite stuff on the threads to keep it steady?
Thanks!
Thanks!
