I noticed while cornering in my Thing I hear a shh-shh-shh type noise. Only when cornering and not all the time. More hard cornering. Sounds maybe from up front but hard to tell. Almost like the brake scraping when adjusting the brakes kind of sound.
The fronts do have repacked bearings. Just did front and rear brakes. New pads/shoes all the way around. Not sure if this has anything to do with it anyway.
I tried various search keywords but could not find anything about sh-sh-sh noise on cornering. Laughing
Anyone have an idea of this kind of sound. Does not sound like tire rub, more a brake adjusting sound when brake shoes are tight and you get some rubbing.

Backing plates get a little tweaked during brake job? Check the clearance between the drums and the backing plates, around the areas around the wheel cylinders and adjusters mount. Especially if there was any force involved freeing frozen adjusters and wheel cylinder bolts.

The driver side front drum is new now that I thought of it. Maybe that is rubbing under harder turns. Someone else on The Samba mentioned maybe the drum is a little loose and the brake pads are rubbing it at certain angles. I only replaced that one drum as the other was in fine shape until I can afford one on the right side also later. It was a new drum, not German, I think a Brazil beetle model. I wonder if it is not the same exact size and that is why I get some brake scraping under hard turns, or maybe like what was said, loose a little so I need to tighten up.vdubyah73 wrote:Backing plates get a little tweaked during brake job? Update after tightening front gland nut a tad more and some new findings.
Well, I still get the scrapping(scraping). I did loosen and re-adjust the gland nut. It was actually still as I left it two years back. Just could barely move the lock washer deal. I tightened a little more and probably, too tight now but I went with it. I am sure if I worked it I could move the washer but did not want to tinker much. So, I know she is tight enough for sure on verge of maybe too tight.
I clicked the brake off one click as she rubbed under straight forward but now it did not. Test ride, same result, scrapping(scraping).
Now, I did notice two things. The rim on that new drum side, is bloody warped. As I was turning the sucker to see if she scraped for brakes I was watching and looks like there is a dent/push in on the rim so she is not running nice and true. Could that be putting oddball stress on that drum allowing it to maybe rub the brake pads on tight turns?
Other thing I noticed, torn ball joint boot on that same new drum side. I know that has to be replaced but could that be allowing some play in the drum area for the scrapes I hear?
I will start scoping out a new stock rim as I will need one anyway but curious what next steps are now that I know she is tight enough. New drum, new bearings, repacked, that whole side is fairly all new parts.
Maybe I am still too tight on pads and need one more click or two but...

I have wrenched on all my cars to some degree but consider myself a novice with enough gumption to learn and try to do this stuff myself with guidance from the internet gallery of Thing gurus. Back off that wheel adjustment to the correct value. You are not allowed to compromise one (critically important) adjustment to fix another (annoyance). Adjust the shoes properly. If you have interference between the drum lip and the backing plate, you may carefully tweak the backing plate for additional clearance, and you may grind the edge of the drum if it has been hit, and displaced metal towards the backing plate, but you may not destroy your wheel bearings.amishman wrote: Just could barely move the lock washer deal. I have purchased new drum and bearings for passenger side front to match driver side front and see if she likes that.
