Cussing clutch wing nut
Is there some trick to this I'm missing? There's so much pressure I can't budge the thing. Bentley says to disconnect it at the tranny before pulling my pedal cluster, but so far all I have is a PITA and no easy solution.
Harumph!

The nut does sit in a square recess, so you have to push the cable back a little bit to release the wingnut so you can turn it.
You may have to spray the area with PB Blaster etc. first.

Don't think you'll be able to get the cable off the pedal hook without loosening the cable first, at least it's like that with a Beetle.
You could just cut the cable and buy a new one if all else fails.

What a struggle. The Bentley makes it sound so easy. Finally got the pedals out. What a mess. Sitting next to the house, a puddle right there at the pedals formed after yesterday's rains. No wonder it's a mess. I guess I need to get some wire brushes, pb blaster and more. disheartening. Hopefully it'll clean up.

Yah I almost lost (almost....) my cool with that Beetle manifold and the studs that stripped. Sometimes it's best to walk away for a spell.
I used the PB and it's great stuff, wayy better than wd40.
Don't let it getcha! Just a car. All in fun.
And if it was easy it wouldn't be worth it/rewarding. Looking forward to seein yer new monster!

Neal, file the ears slightly on the wingnut, grease the lever and cable threads good, and your future will be bright with easy clutch adjustments.ruckman101 wrote:What a struggle. That does look handy. Even lubing that thing up with silicon spray, and prying the arm on the transmission back with a screwdriver, it was still excruciating, bruising my po wittle fingers.
I thought about vice grips, or pliers, but no clearance. My hands are still recuperating.

What "thing" are you referencing when you "lube it up"? (Sorry..I know how that sounds, I didn't mean it that way) The wing-nut or the tool? I was debating buying the tool, but I'm not sure if you're saying using the tool was excruciating or turning the nut was..ruckman101 wrote:That does look handy. I had no helper tool, just the wing-nut alone was plenty vexxing. Vise-grips on the cable, prying tranny arm back to relieve pressurek, still a battle after hosing the cable threads with silicone spray.
I'll have it slathered in all-purpose grease before the wing-nut goes back on.
