My engine is about ready to come apart, got the tin, accessories and most of the misc off last night with the help of Mike B. Looking forward to splitting it open and doing some diagnostics.

However, my attention needs to shift a little as I need to get the engine swapped from the parts bus into my camper. The goal is to be drivable and get to Maupin. Gypsie and I are going to give that a go on Saturday, I just need to get the engine to my place by then.

Going to start getting it ready tonight but will need to arrange some help to get moved.

I have been parts shopping to get an idea on my costs. What brands are current favorites?

Also, upgrades - what ones are real and what is just throwing money? My goal is to stay stock, since I don't ml know more than VW, but would be open to enhancements if they don't lead too far astray.

Is Halls/whatever it's called now no longer machining air cooled VW parts?

Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm going out on a limb here.
My understanding is, Troy worked for Dan Hall. Dan Hall retired / closed and was closed for a period of time. Troy purchased the business and opened it back up. Now it appears that A-1 is again closed and Troy is now working for Clackamas Auto Parts in their machine shop.

That's what they told me this morning. Sounds like Troy decided to team up with the Clackamas shop.

So engine drop, the sequel, is happening this evening in front of MentalQTip's house. If the stars align and the creeks don't rise.

Gypsy, WestyFrank and I, with an assist from MentalQtip, tore the engine the rest of the way down today. We found bearing that look surprisingly good throughout. We did, however, see quite a bit of piston damage.

Questions as I wait for my pictures to load. Could the knock be related to the piston damage? Especially the erosion on #3? Could the erosion have been due to the faulty injector connection I had intermittently on 3 last summer? Lots of cylinder scuffing there too, which Colin predicted.

We have the temporary engine in my garage. It came out of an automatic and the pinion bearing was all gooped up. We PB blasted it and at least the surface bearing are now moving. Is there a diagnostic on if it is lubed up enough? Should it be replaced? Bentley shows special "VW tools" to do so, is there an alternative procedure?

Oh, and anybody every heard of a "Claude's Buggies" oil pump? That's what I have on my engine, and it don't seem stock.
