Locoqueso loco mechanico

Post by Amskeptic » Mon Oct 25, 2010 2:04 pm

Visted locoqueso after the marathon in Indiana with Poptoptom. Locoqueso had a bus that would not release its clutch. This bus is the closest relative to the BobD in the country, it has its original Taigagrun paint which is pretty much in better condition than the BobD's along the front doors and front end. It has but 140,000 miles, and it has Inspector Otto's sign-off paint and the emission code still on the original engine tin paint.

Locoqueso's first engine drop at 4" and 37 minutes:

And 75 minutes later, it was free of the car:
Image

Looks like we had an oil leak causing clutch dust/oil mud that stuck the disk to the flywheel friction surface. We had to pry the disk off of the flywheel:
Image

And look how clean the engine got after a bit of thorough cleaning:
Image

After some detail work sanding the flywheel and the pressure plate and installing a new 0-ring and front seal:
Image

. . . . we slapped that sucker back in, actually, it mostly reinstalled itself, and we took a test drive, a smooth-clutching test drive. With such a lovely original VW Westfalia, locoqueso is becoming aware of the awesome responsibility of being a steward of one of the last magnificent examples of a time long gone.
Arncha? Youbetcha.

It was a great day. I was able to drive the bus around last weekend and the shifting was so smooth. Thanks again for all of your help Colin! This was my fourth visit in about 28 months. It was probably the most physical, but also the most rewarding.

I appreciate the kind words about my bus. I'm just thankful the original owner tried to take care of it over the years.

Keep me posted on the mystery oil leak that has developed. You might have an opportunity to see how well you learned the engine removal operation when you drop that sucker again to JB Weld the gallery plugs or sumpin. It can't be the front seal, not with that beautiful case surface and careful installation of the new flywheel o-ring and front main seal. So? Is it transmission oil or engine oil?

Stay tuned.

This is great news Colin! We still have to get my van running well with the new distributor so I can actually pass smog! Then I can be legal again. I've been driving around the past two months with expired registration! Not so good...

Have you been in touch with Lanval at all? My schedule is pretty flexible.

Colin, I just saw Lanval yesterday. We took the pop-top off of his Vanagon so it could fit in his garage, in preparation for your visit--which it did, just barely.

I don't know if he has PM'd you yet, but he was talking about possibly switching the days that you work with him to Sunday and Monday, and then work with me on Saturday, since it works better for his teaching schedule.

I will reserve Sunday and Monday for Lanval, and an emergency Tuesday for FUBAR list.
You and I can shoot for Saturday, but be prepared, be very prepared for Thursday. I might not make it out there in a timely fashion.
