Itinerant Air-Cooled Greetings Catskills I

Frankly, I find the fall colors look like someone dropped a tab of acid and stuck their head in a box of Trix and sneezed. . . utterly garish:

Let's remember what "Fall" is about:

Now before you tell me to:

I was heartened to find that this camera managed to mute some of the excessive coloryness of reality here in the Catskills:

The landscape in the Catskills is gorgeous, and there are roads that wend their way through stands of trees and across brooks and they give you the very picture of rural timelessness:

And lookee here! The fence I built in '99 for my oldest friend/gradeschool girlfriend. Still standing and so is our friendship:

I visited her and her mom for the last presidential debate. Her mom, who I had a major crush on in 1970, pretty much restored this house herself. She is now 82 and I am completely blown away by how healthy and alert and timeless she is. She and I did the roof on the shed in November of 1999, and she is most definitely of the school "Use It Or Lose It." She has lost nothing:

More of this riot of colorful slow dying known as "Autumn" to come. . . .

Fall. If it could go straight into spring, it would be much easier to appreciate.

The smell of fall is soooo so nice though! I love the open window almost too cool but crisp drives and/or bike rides this time of year. Now, the kid that came to our door 5 times at the rental place we had the last month to ask to rake our leaves was a bit annoying although cute. Rake the leaves kid, make a big pile and jump in, roll around....and lay off the door to door leave salesman gig and BE A KID!

i love the scent of fall too. our cat came into the house the other day and when emmett picked him up he said--you smell like october! its very distinct--but i wonder where it comes from. (colin would say decomposition.)

Oh yeah. I like to do my school work with the front window open so I can hear the kids playing and see the cars go by--even if I have to wear a hoodie.

A couple more photographs of the decay and decomposition:

No pictures of my rainy campsite. It rained and rained. Woke up at some point to have a conversation with my bladder.
"Gotta go."
"No we don't."
"Yes we do."
"No. It is too cold."
"Gotta go."
"Will you cut it out?"
"Hear the rain trickling?"
"Exactly."
"Hear the rain trickling like you're about to?"
"Cut it OUT."
"Gotta go."
"I am going to pretend you do not exist."
"No you're not. Here's a tric. . . "
"OH ALL RIGHT."
Lurched out into the rainy night and only just barely in the nick of time.
When all was done, and I was painstakingly wrapped up in my cocoon once more ready to drift off to sleep, I had a new conversation not with my now quiescent bladder, but my freshly awake brain.
"Time to sleep."
"No it's not."
"YES IT IS."
"Did you see your Visa bill?"
"I have to sleep."
"I think the engine is losing power."
"I - must - sleep ! "
"Not with this toothache, dentistry is expensive."
"I am not listening to you."
"Are you ever going to get that book done?"
"La-la-la-la-la-la-"
". . . but really, if the gearshift is vibrating and the carbs ARE synchronized, and the engine is intrinsically balanced, then it has to be a differential in pumping efficiency somewhere in the engine, like the valve guides which must be worn oval by now, remember? you bought them sight unseen off Ebay."
"I must sleep."

At the risk of seriously embarrassing personal disclosure, Zip-Loc baggies. Especially the new, double closure ones. :drunken:
