San Juan camping

Post by Westy78 » Sat Sep 05, 2009 2:16 pm

Finally have some time to post up some photos from this years San Juan trip. We had decent weather this year but still nothing like the first year we did it. We at least had no rain but clouds that kept the temps down in the lower 70's upper 60's some days. Made for some great sunsets though. The downside for no rain in nearly a month was a burn ban for all of San Juan County. No campfires the whole trip.

We'd like to get more people up there next year. It's a ways to go and takes a bit of cash but it's worth it. Most likely it'll be sometime in August so if you can, put it on the calendar. We usually do a full week but if you can only make it up for a few days it'd still be great to have some more VW people to hang with.

We left Friday morning to catch the ferry at Port Townsend mid afternoon.

Stayed the first night at Deception Pass. Made for an easy trip to Anacortes to catch the Ferry to the islands the next morning.

Next morning we caught the ferry to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island to get groceries and have lunch at Roche Harbor. It's a great place to wander around and look at the massive yachts, sail boats and little gift shops.

Then it was on to Orcas Island where we would spend the first four nights. Here we are on top of Mt. Constitution. It was a bit hazy so the views were not as great as they could have been.

Image

We stayed in Moran State Park on one of the lakes. Our view from the campsite.

Fun with Photo shop.

A visitor.

The bridge across the lagoon. Popular swimming spot for da yewts.

The lagoon. Peaceful and quiet.

The park just down the way from the campground.

Image

Panorama from the other side of the lake.

Image

Dinner. Tri tip, corn bread, corn, Lagunitas. Tasty would be an understatement.

Image

Image

After four nights there we moved onto Lopez Island and Odlin county park where we had the best spot in the whole park. Right on the water.

Took a day trip into Lopez Village for a shower and lunch with a trip out to Shark Reef Wildlife Refuge. Lot's o' seals but no whales.

Then over to Spencer Spit to take a walk.

Image

Image

Image

Some serious drift wood fort construction.

Image

One morning we were greeted with a sailboat regatta.

Large, classic sailing vessel.

The evenings were wrapped up with amazing sunsets.

And of course, Cow kept a close eye out.

A tip for anyone leaving the islands on Sunday. Get to the ferry landing EARLY. We were in line two hours early for the boat we wanted to catch. To late. We had to wait in line for nearly five hours before the next boat to Anacortes which made us miss the reservation we had from Whidbey back to Port Townsend. So against my likes for long interstate driving we had to hit I-5 south the whole way home. Pulled into the driveway close to 10:00pm. Next time we'll try leaving on a different day or much earlier.
Chorizo, it's what's for breakfast.

Hiya Jasan,

Way cool! The San Juans are certainly one of my favorite spots. Great pix also!

FWIW, I'm told by those that should know.........you'll see seals or you'll see killer whales but you'll never see them both in the same proximity. The predetator-prey equation in action.

Thanks guys. Yeah I suppose the seals and whales don't play well with each other.

The Lopez locals will often get there early enough to drop their car off and then go back home and come back right before loading time. If yer not hanging with a group, you kinda have to stick around cause the landing is so far from the village and anything to do other than a walk around.

But you could get there and then make breakfast while sitting on line. It's definitely an acquired skill to hit it right.
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

Just Wow!
The best navigators aren't sure where they're going until they get there. And then they're still not sure.

I plan on making this one of the highest priority camps this next summer (after the RendezVW, of course) Late august Early September.

We should try to make it a biggun on the list. Kayaks would be extra special. Crab pots, keg, and scads o' busses. Twas Dubtacular a couple years ago.
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

I did a trip last summer, very similar to Jasan's and loved it. I agree with Gypsie, this should be priority #2~
