Yeah I know -- the same bulls**t weather that brought this recent snow has kept me from working on the Bus as much as I'd like. Might've been done by now if things'd cooperated.

Snow level now deep at 3800'. Looks to be another month before we can get out there. Same for other camps at this elevation in the western Cascades. Typical for this time of year anyway.

Me an Hal talked about this a bit last nite at the Laboraadoraahaha.
Depending on when he finishes his damn engine, but maybe early July?
Or the end of June, I have the last week off. It may be a good spot for a few days, depending of course on that road.

Hmm it may still be passible (from Oregon Kyakers website):

Go right on 58 about one mile then right on FR 240.

Go about five miles on 240 until you see 240 branch off to the left and change from gravel to dirt, take 240 left and continue to Linney Creek trail head. ( A couple miles after you turn onto 240 left, if it's a nice day, you should see a great view of Hood sitting above the headwater of the Salmon River to the right ).

Yes, I've driven down that road several times over the years when I was scouting that stretch. I remember it being quite a bit better than end of 4611. Rockier maybe but no mud puddles and slick mud. I think you'd be o.k. if it hasn't degraded that much over the years. I probably haven't been back there for at least 6 years or so though. Definitely worth a try. There is a campsite at the end of it and a good trail connects from there to the Salmon trail. Beautiful place.

Against my better judgement I may try to get in to Linney Creek this weekend. Am considering camping for up to 5 days, depending on weather etc. It may be just me and Eva.
Anyone interested in some camping?

Update: I'm not sure if this is one I want to attempt alone. The snow is still damn low in the Clackamas; 2' of snow at 4300' in some locations! Those are March conditions! Wow.

Harumph I want to go to Linney. The road in is below the snow level, but God knows the condition. Well I guess I could just try to get in, and if it's too scary go someplace else. Or just wait on Linney and go someplace I know is open, like Rho Creek or the Collowash.

Well I'll wait and see if anyone wants to join us out there.

Hey, if'n you can push it back towards like .. early/mid July I outta be able to make it. The 8-9-10-11 weekend or the 15-16-17-18 are open-ish for me, then I can't escape on weekends until August 12th .. two other people are taking off between there.

I have like 5 vacation days free so I want to go someplace crazy that I probably won't run into the mobs. Unfortunately planned WAY in advance.
Even if I do go there, we can always go back (theoretically). Or go someplace equally crazy. Take the time off! I've been harassing you to go camp since 1926.
16-18 July should work but let me check first.

Hey don't forget Hambone Springs. Right now the road is blocked by snow, but it should be gone in a few weeks if we actually get summer weather. No date yet but some time in late July. Maybe the 16th?

Ok well I'm goin without ya. 4 days out there...hope the road to Linney is still passable. If not then I'll figure something out.
Directions already posted above if you git a wild hair and decide to show up.

I'm leaving Saturday morning, so if I come to my senses and decide to go someplace else I'll let all 4 of you know.

Looks like the family is staying home for this one.

(Kirk man how many campers do you own now? 14? And it's summertime quit screwin around)

Man I can't wait to get the hell out of town.

Hey now, I *just* drove my Bus today, for the first time in months .. about a block down the street & back to the driveway. Clutch adjustment, idle adjustment, mixture adjustment, timing adjustment and WTF IS THAT SQUEAL I hope to g0d it isn't the timing belt tensioner that thing is new it shouldn't be squealing like that I even spent good money for the Germany-boxed Slovakian tensioner instead of the Chinese POS goddammitsomuch....

A bit challenging to find, a couple of roads not on the map. But all in all a worthy destination.
240 is Abbot Road quality, but less terrifying. It really drops you smack dab into the middle of very deep wilderness. We'll have to plan a fall (or earlier) trip.
Many abandoned trails, deep huckleberry bushes taller than a man. Roaring pure creeks and rivers everywhere. Oozing history.
We spent a day trying to find the trail to Hambone but only came away with bloody legs and frustration. It is ALIVE out there! Nature as liquid and green. 5 maps, all with different info. I love it.

camp (actual Linney is not driveable; we camped on a very lovely bench at the end of the road just above the historic camp)

lies (abandoned for at least 20 years but somewhat followable)

The foundation for the old guard station is still there, right on the banks of the Salmon River. Tried some fly fishing but only caught a couple tiny trout. All and all a very pristine and exciting place.

After 4 days in the woods, I came home, and then left the next morning for the coast! Crazy. 550 miles on the bus in a week. [/img]
