Big Sur Camping Trip

Post by covelo » Sat Nov 24, 2007 11:11 pm

We just came back from a five-day camping trip to Big Sur. The weather was just spectacular and the bus trouble free as usual (knock on wood emoticon needed here). We drove about 450 miles total and spent about $80 on gas. We also experienced our first unsuccessful boondock experience! On Tuesday evening we were camped at the Carmel Mission (a favorite spot of ours for many years) when we got rudely woken up by two police cars at 2am. Apparently, the town of Carmel passed a "no sleeping in vehicles" ordinance. Fortunately, the police were friendly and didn't ticket us. They told us to drive 100 yards to the little Safeway shopping center at the Southern edge of town, where we could continue our sleep, because it was "county." Lots of RVs there, so I guess word had gotten around.

On Wednesday we first visited Point Lobos Reserve, which is one of our most favorite spots in California. A few pictures below.

We then drove south to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, which is in the town of Big Sur. A very nice campground, albeit a little too big for our tastes. Right outside the campground is a little winding road down to Pfeiffer Beach, where we watched the sunset:

On Thanksgiving Day we drove a little further south and camped at a lovely National Forest campground called Plaskett Creek. It is right across Hwy 1 from this beautiful beach with some magnificent bluffs. The campground itself is also very attractive and comfortable:

This morning before we left we saw a beautiful moon set.

A fabulous trip and we didn't miss the turkey and fixings at all!
