Summer 2019!

Post by appetite » Sat Dec 29, 2018 12:31 pm

Hello kind forum,

We are entering the long, dark winter months here in New Jersey, and already I'm dreaming of summer. Our family plans to do some bus camping in 2019 and we are looking for recommendations.

Our wish is to find beach camping sites anywhere along the Atlantic coast from Delaware to South Carolina. Nothing fancy, just quick access to the ocean and relatively clean facilities. Places like Edisto Beach State Park in SC, for instance.

Anyone have any experiences they could share?

Thanks,

James

Assateague Island (Maryland). I do not know if it is as friendly as it was when I last went there, but it was sandy, beautiful.

I recall a childhood trip to Assateague Island. We were in a tent and it pissed rain all night! The next morning, my father gave up, threw us in the car and headed for the nearest diner. Good times!

I'll check out bus camping possibilities.

fairly close to Edisto. but Huntington Beach has a nice campground as well. Both spots are nice and extremely low key.

So hooray, we are booked at the beach campground at Edisto Island, 8/11 to 8/15. We are going to build our summer bus trip around those dates. Here: https://southcarolinaparks.com/edisto-beach/camping

We will likely leave NJ on 8/6 with a stop in DC to show the kids the monuments and then spend the night at a friend's outside of DC. Then perhaps we will try to make it to Raleigh on 8/7 and look for a place to stay. I'm looking for suggestions if anyone is from the area. Charleston on 8/9 and maybe 8/10. Then drive the hour to the coast and Edisto on the morning of 8/11.

On the way back our schedule is pretty open. I think we'd like to get back to NJ around 8/20, so we will have time to drive up the coast and pop into some beach towns along the way. I think our final stop will be in Delaware at a campground outside of Rehoboth. Here: https://delawarestateparks.reserveameri ... kId=360109

Trying to limit travel on driving days to about 4-5 hours. I'd like to avoid mega-highways such as I95 as much as possible, although I realize they are the most direct routes. Kids will be 8 and 5, wild-eyed and feral. And my wife is patient and adventurous. The bus is in good shape and hopefully the IAC schedule will start in the Northeast in the Spring so I can work out any kinks before the trip.

Doable? Overly ambitious?

James

The return trip is coming into focus...

Adding a stop on the way back north at Ocean Isle, NC (a couple nights in a hotel after camping at Edisto).

Then perhaps First Landing State park outside of Virginia Beach: http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks ... ns_camping

Final stop in Delaware, Cape Henlopen State Park: https://www.destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopen

Still looking for recommendations on the way down in North Carolina, between Richmond and Charleston. Anyone camp in that orbit off of 95?

I am gob-smacked 8 and 5 . . . . ?!
Wild-eyed and feral, I get.
Patient and adventurous, count your blessings.
Kinks, we can take care of them.
