Memorial Day 2014 & 5-8-2015 - Granite Power Camp

Post by hambone » Tue May 20, 2014 9:29 am

I was just reminded that Memorial Day is THIS weekend, NOT next! :drunken:
I am going out to the Clackamas on Friday if anyone is interested in a camp for a few days. Weather looks pretty nice, 70 and slight chance of showers at 2000'.
I am still looking for a place to go, possibly Big Bottom area? The snow still lingers above 3000'.
If anyone is interested I will post directions to someplace. :flower:

Where abouts are you? Snow is nice but the big drifts block the roads in the shady spots locking us out of the high country until the thick mosquito season of summer.
Don is going out tomorrow to check things out, thinking of near Burnt Granite.

As much as I want to go camping Janelle wants to go more.
Melissa and Janelle will have things packed Friday while I'm at work and we should be pulling out of Redland around 4:30.
Please post me a map.

Ok Don gave the ALL CLEAR on GRANITE Camp, he even cut out 5 trees blocking the road.
It is close to Pot Ck but on the opposite ridge.
Directions:
224 to Ripplebrook
46
pass 42
right 4670
left after Clackamas River bridge
climb, stay right at 1st junction
stay on 4670, 2 more junctions
right at 4650 (2nd junction)
go about 3.5 miles, pass powerlines
right on 130
camp is a mile or so down 130, stay right at last jct. about 3/4 mile down.

hope this makes sense, we will avoid the maddening crowds though.
Watch for the hubcap, don't get lost, check your district map.

Updated camp forecast, slightly damp but otherwise looks pretty nice:

Friday Showers likely, mainly after 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 72. Light west wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
Friday Night A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. West northwest wind around 9 mph.
Saturday Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. West northwest wind 5 to 11 mph.
Saturday Night Partly cloudy, with a low around 43. West wind 5 to 11 mph.
Sunday A 30 percent chance of showers after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 69.
Sunday Night Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 46. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
Memorial Day A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63.

ehhhh it's the Cascades whattya expect? Funny the lows now are higher than the highs in the wetter seasons....and that's why I don't camp much in those seasons.

I am thinking of going here this coming weekend if anyone's interested, family out of town and I am free. Plus that trail needs work.
May 8th 2015 weekend, I am getting lazy.

If I'm not getting a '58 Camper barn find this weekend I'll be there if you are.
