NHAL Trip Report (Northern WI) - August 2012

We spent about a week in the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest, stopping at the Dells of the Eau Claire on the way up and Hartman Creek on the way back. We had gorgeous weather, it only rained one day and on the final drive home.
The Dells were really scenic. I had heard of them a few years back but had never had a chance to visit. It's just a small county park that's off the beaten path, but well worth the look. The campground was actually very nice, too.
We stayed on one of the lakefront sites at Crystal Lake in the NHAL. I think we each read about five or six books on this trip, we spent plenty of time just relaxing.
We did do some hiking and biking too, it was eight miles one way to nearby Trout Lake and there's a nice bike trail that we took. We hiked around Fallison Lake, too, which was very pretty in the early morning stillness.
Base Camp and some good meals:
Hartman Creek is a State Park near Waupaca and we spent the final two nights of the trip there before driving home yesterday (Sunday). Nothing fancy, just another peaceful relaxing patch of forest near some springfed lakes.
It was a nice, easy, refreshing trip. We were able to celebrate our 7th anniversary with great weather and beautiful scenery. Doesn't get much better than that.
