What about Elk Lake? Shouldn't be many people up there this time of year but that road in will put your suspension to the test. Not sure on the elevation at the lake.
Chorizo, it's what's for breakfast.

Can you believe I don't have a Detroit RD map? I'll get one tomorrow. I don't mind, it's fun figuring it out.
Seems like we have an area figured out at least! Onward...

Man, I miss camping. September and the San Juan's seem so long ago.
Sigh.

Here's the area I'm looking into. The road to Breitenbush (FS46) should be plowed, allowing further winter access. Ya know, all we really have to do is drive down the road as far as we can and find a good pulloff point. It should be easy to make ourselves obvious for the late arrivals.
Breitenbush gets a lot of traffic even in the winter so I know the area is accessible. That's a cool place actually, hot springs!

This may be a good place to shoot for, although the Cleator Bend Campground is closed for the season, it looks to be in old growth forest and a bridge over the river is right there. Assuming the snow isn't too deep. Are you guys bringin snow-gear? I don't really have anything.

What about this spot? Same general area...On the north fork of the Santiam with a trail system adjacent....a bit lower elevation too so snow won't likely be an issue. Says "fee" but this time of year we're probably good to go.

I've actually camped there a few years back. Not the most exciting area but it is low elevation so it should be accessible. There are a couple of expected snowstorms coming thru, with a few inches of accumulation expected at lower elevations, but who knows for sure...

Glad you've been there...sounds like not our 1st choice. I'm hopefully picking up a more detailed map of the area tomorrow. Breitenbush area sounds like a plan...proly wanna stay on the "low" side of things...1500-2000 or so? Okay Eugene crew...chime in anytime...either of you been up this way? Otherwise, Bob and I will pick a spot and you'll be at our mercy :geek:

It's not a bad spot. I'd go to either area.
Found out there's an abandoned hot springs resort with just the pools left, somewhere West of Breitenbush along the river. Not sure if we'd be able to find it or even get that far, but it was interesting to discover.
Come on you Eugeners, whattya say?

I like where this is heading. Just tell me where and I'll go.

We're stoked for snow, so don't be shy about that. I'm bringing the Coleman Cat and my woodstove, so things will be toasty. Plus we gotta have one helluva campfire.

May opt to leave closer to 1 or 2, if it's not to busy at work, to at least get some light out of the day... (sorry, John) Wanna be able to see on those forest roads. Any of you folks have a cb? Or even a set of those Motorola two ways? We could try to contact you once we get nearby to zero in on the camp.

Looks like Willamette Nat'l Forest is the gig...Bob and I will try to narrow down the area to a more precise location. Yes, I have two-way radios...8 mile range which means 1 mile unless a squirrel or rabbitt is in the way...heaven forbid a tree or two. Stay tuned...Bob and I will be somewhere you can find us :drunken:

OK, quick update for me. Work has piled on unbelievably so far this week. If I can't get my ducks in a line by Thurs. nite, I'm afraid I'll probably have to bail. Sorry I haven't been more help with sites.

Secondly, what is the status of kids?
Mark, Bob, either of you bringing little ones? My oldest son really wants to come along (he'd kill me if I called him a little one!).
