March 30 - April 1 Northwest Camp Trip 2007
"Bring the whole damn kids - yippie"
I've heard the following ideas bagdered about: somewhere around the lower reaches of Mt. Rainier, Clearwater Wilderness (north of Rainier), Or Deschutesland National Rec lands around Wamic, or hell even E. Badger Creek. Maybe Mid March? Spiffy's gotta check his calendar. Hmm interesting choices. The desert would be beautiful that time of year, things starting to warm up. And then the Rainier area rainforest. Who knows what else? It's fun to have something to look forward to in the outdoors when the wind and rain are howlin' outside...then again, mid March in the mountains can be a howlin' affair. I'm eternally optimistic.
Socialist camping!

Hmm having trouble finding a place around Rainier that will be snow free in March...I don't really know much about that area to tell the truth. I have a couple books and some maps...

Well, Rainier is out:
"The park remains closed due to damage from flooding in early November 2006. The closure is in effect until further notice. SRs 410 & 123, Carbon River Road and the Paul Peak/Mowich Lake area are open to non-motorized use."
How do you close down a mountain? (I know it's just the roads....)
The Washington plot thickens. Seems like the more I look into it, the southern Wash Cascades are a warm season destination.
How far is it to Hoh? Would you Washington folks consider West-Central Oregon?

Just tryin ta get somethin goin! Wonder where all the goons went?
I spent hours last nite lookin at maps and wilderness books. It's really hard to find winter camp spots east of Puget Sound due to the lay of the land. Lots of "flat" private land (heavily logged) then the Cascades rear up like an angry ape.
There's the possibility of St. Helens area, but I don't have enough experience in that area to really recommend a place...
Until that snow starts a meltin' one is somewhat limited this time o' year. Even down in the Clackamas it's tuff to get places. The desert has the advantage of accessibility due to lower snowpack.
You mentioned the coast, what's goin on over there? I know a couple nice spots down by Yachats...but that would be too far for you folks.

Yeppers, Hoh is a trek but lots to see, we would definitely want to make it a three nighter to make it worthwhile if we planned it.
I am really up for anything, sucks having spring/summer fever in the middle of the damn winter
I have one weekend in march....I have two weeks of required green suit training the first two weekends...the weekend after that is open for me.
