Removing Fuel Tank with Engine Installed

With a T4 FI engine, it was easy. I undressed the top of the engine, and then removed the transmission carrier bolts and the rear carrier bolts to the frame. This allowed me to lower the engine to give clearance to get the tank out.

The tank came out easily and was much lighter than I had expected it to be.

Inside the tank were a washer and 3 chunks of rubber apparently left over from when the PO hacked out the unleaded-fuel-only restrictor from the filler neck. I'm convinced these small pieces were the cause of my occasional fuel-line blockages (too big to get down the line to the filter).

Anyway, if your tank needs to come out, it CAN be done without removing the engine!

I read the same thing over on The Samba. One of these days I need to replace my sender. I like this option a lot more than cutting the access hole. Removing all the FI stuff is no big deal.
