Hi, last summer when you were out here, you showed me a vacuum trick to determine proper mixture adjustment, and I'll be damned if I remember what you did..something about holding yer finger 1/2 off a carb port and seeing if the engine dies...Well it was great stuff and I'd like to know what you did!
Th' ol' thinky-box aint' what she used ta be.

Warm engine.
Find vacuum port underneath the throttle plate.
Remove little hose or plug.
A) Finger on the port.
B) Finger off the port- air rushing in now -
you have three options:
1. idle goes up
2. idle stays the same roughens a little
3. idle goes down
Results:
1. too rich
2. it's fine
3. lean

I don't have the port under my carb..so I had to do it the old fashioned (insane making) way. Turn the mixture screw 1/4 turn, jump in the car and drive a few blocks, jump out and do it again, drive around the neighborhood, jump out like a maniac, do it again (Don't worry sir I'm not THAT crazy yer kids are safe and maybe your dogs) until my nuerotic mind says "close enuff"...The last time I had to adjust a carb in such a manner was on Chicago streets in 1994! Twas a pain in the ass then too. The problem is a 1/4 turn doesn't change much. I THINK I found the "sweet spot" but time will tell....
I did JB Weld the hole in the heat riser but it's leaking from the front too. I may have to pull it.

Hey Hambone the idle mixture screw only adjusts the mixture at idle speed (i.e. <1000rpm), so driving it should tell you little or nothing about the idle mix.
Take care,
Rick
