Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
I'm doing this process now, thanks for the awesome write up. Got my mechanism out, my nylon block is blown the hell out, so that will be replaced. The roller was not moving, a little help from PB Blaster got it rolling but before I spend any time on the roller, I have a question...
Is there more than one roller design? Mine doesn't have an outer lip like what I see above. It only has an inner lip. It doesn't look like it's broken or an outer lip (part that would actually be closer to the body) is worn off.

Your outer lip has taken its leave of the premises. Get a new proper roller.Sneaks wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 12:20 pmI'm doing this process now, thanks for the awesome write up. Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
Another wonderful tutorial to add to my list of things to tackle. Thanks, Colin!
Before making a start, I assume there shouldn't be as much play in the u-bracket/hinge as my video suggests? This is me lifting the open door from the rear, bottom corner.

a) obtain a good used assembly at once.
b) I think a machinist could provide you with a bushing pressed into the re-piloted hinge with an inner diameter that matches that of the pin.

Used assembly on its way and should be delivered tomorrow. Managed to score a chrome u-bracket tooAmskeptic wrote: ↑Mon Nov 12, 2018 7:47 amThat is trouble.stevespeirs wrote: ↑Fri Nov 09, 2018 12:36 pmAnother wonderful tutorial to add to my list of things to tackle. Thanks, Colin!

In other news on the opposite side of the hinge assembly, cleaned up the oh-so-dirty rail, replaced the badly worn nylon block and fitted a new roller. The old roller had a bit of a flat spot, so great to have things rolling along nicely now.
Looking forward to fixing the hinge play, then installing new, flexible beading and popping the cover back on.
So thankful for the step-by-step tutorial and words of wisdom. Cheers, Colin!

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
My plastic glide is broken off behind the rail, so the glide moves outward away from the rail right before the door pivots into the latch.
I have a replacement glide on order, but I have questions:
1. How does the plastic glide attach? Looks like a big rivet? How do I duplicate that?
2. Is there potentially some other problem with my hinge mechanism that exerts undue outward pressure on the glide? Is that what caused it to break in the first place?

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
It's a big rivet.
With another big rivet or a tidy little nut/bolt.
Yes, not lubricating the hinge pins. You might also want to dispense with petroleum grease on the glide and switch to silicone grease.

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
The rivet can be replaced with an M6 Phillips head machine screw, and matching nut. This is one of the only places on the car where I would recommend a Nylock nut.
Just a note that some new nylon blocks require clearencing to fit into some bay slider door tracks. Once installed, the top inner corner needs a 45° angle cut a few mm deep to clear the block upper guide lip.
See how this one has an angled cut?

Some commonly available blocks don't have that cut, but need it:

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
Done! Wow, what a difference! (Not quite as quiet and smooth as Robbie's, but much, much better!)

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
When did you close Robbie's sliding door?
Our later bus sliding doors do not have the engineering of the originals . . .

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
Instagram? The Samba maybe?
A well-ministered-to late slider is superior in operation to a dirty or neglected early slider, but it’s true.... the early sliders offer an inherent precision that is a joy to live with. Though I have found a trick for the late bay coil spring that allows easier/quieter closing and opening without sacrificing security... I will post it here as soon as I can replicate it on three late buses.
One down, two to go.

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
Does it involve reducing the spring tension? As I worked through the refresh it seemed that the door would work very well with much less tension. Maybe the high tension is safety factor for crud accumulation?

Re: Sliding Door Hinge Assy Refresh
Essentially, yes. The tension isn't a problem if everything is clean, lubricated, and adjusted properly. Like I said, I need to prove it first; last late bay I worked on had missing components that we pieced together from ads, so I'm not sure my hack will work on a factory door.
