I have a mystery part and I do not understand it's purpose. What do I have here?

This piece was mounted in the engine compartment of my '76 bus on the passenger side. It was connected between the positive cable going to the battery and the starter. It doesn't have any VW/Audi markings. What do I have here?

What was connected to the smaller terminals? It appears to be a heavy-duty relay, perhaps to disconnect the battery during prolonged periods of the bus not being used.
