Crane Optical Ignition

Post by IFBwax » Wed Jul 29, 2009 6:09 pm

Can someone educate me about Crane optical pickups for use in your dizzy?

Link for the exact model and experiences good or bad with it. Why do I need it. Geoff swears by it. This would replace the points in Charlie. Are they suitable in a bus with my stock dizzy?

Thanks@@@@

You can order it from there and it fits right in...
My experiences are that it doesn't burn out if you leave the key on like the Pertronix, thats a good thing. It stablizes the timing some if your dizzy is getting alittle old...
Its hard to set up the right timing ring and pickup at the install but once its in its "forget about it".
Can be used with the Blue Bosch coil or you can buy the Crane Fireball stuff

For optical dizzys I would go with a Mallory.

I ran Pertronix I believe once. It was dandy until my coil fried shortly after that, and then mucking around I fried the unit. Points have been very very good to me.

Yeah but the Mallory is the entire distributor. this is just an insert and probably 1/4 the price.

Parts? No, but lots of pictures. The 50's bug with the diesel 1200 engine was way cool. Porsche built it as a prototype study for VW. Not much to buy in the goodie store :(

A 1.2L diesel AC... God, that's something awesome that I wish it developed into the goodness.

Depends on who you decide to believe. Buy them from AC.net and John will back you up. Mine is working just fine with no scatter.

I think he was talking about the 1.2L diesel engine at the VW museum. If'n it'll fit in a 36hp Bug engine bay, it'll fit in a Bus. *moving* the Bus is a different story entirely...
