Coils & Hot Spark Igniton Replacement Kit

Post by DurocShark » Thu Jan 25, 2007 8:20 am

I'm having some issues with the Hot Spark rig, and am going through some troubleshooting.

My question right now regards coils.

I have a Bosch blue coil. When I tested its resistance to see if I need to add a ballast resistor it came up 8k ohms. Eh?

So I tested my old black stock one. Same thing.

Any ideas? I was getting 2.7 on the blue before I replaced the battery in my multimeter.

It works fine with points, but the minute I put the hotspark in I lose ignition. I get one spark out of every 4 or so.

Are you still having issues with this?

Ahh... yeah, but the coils test correctly now. I had a resistor shorting in my mm. 3.3 and 3.5 are the resistances.

Haven't gone back to try the hotspark again yet. Will today.

How old is the hotspark? I've had coils start to break down on me after a period of time.

Brand new. They sent me another one too to see if it was the unit. Both had the same issue. I've tried both my new blue coil and the old stock one.

Had Geri Lou die on us Monday, luckily in front of the house. Turns out the connection at the coil was corroded to hell, all green with chunks missing, on both the coil and the lead. The coil was a Neihoff with about 20k on it. Wire came on the bus.

Is this normal, or is there some other cause?

I got my Hot Spark yesterday and I'm having the same exact problem. Only fires one or two out of four. Put the points back and no problems. Huh? I e-mailed them today.

Was your issue ever resolved?

Not yet. They're currently recommending a ballast resistor. I tried one that might have been too big, so I'm gonna get a smaller one and try again.

Sounds like BS to me. I used my Pertronix and it runs but something is wrong with the unit and it makes the timing stick. These are almost identical to a Pertronix and I get nothing.
