rockford CV boots again! According to curtis4085 (if he is still amongst us),
"What Rockford has listed is correct. http://www.rockfordcv.com/Volkswagen_bootkits.htm
I bought the transporter ones and they are right size. Now awhile ago I heard they were selling short boots but from what I understand it's been fixed.(they have 4 ribs) part # 339-22"

Re: Parts: Known to be Acceptable
I just ordered the Rockford CV Boot Kits #339-22 directly from Rockford. 1-815-962-1411
They have a 2-tiered pricing - consumer or "jobber" for if you are some sort of business. The difference was pretty dramatic. The rep ended up giving me the lower price, but I am not sure if they do that regularly or not. I suppose if you made the case that you were a repair business, or a fleet customer up front you would be given the lower price first. fyi.
On 5/29/13 the consumer price was $29.20, and the "jobber" price was $17.49. This includes the boot, grease, circlip, but not new bolts. I will edit this post when they arrive.
2/25/2017: Ok, I didn't update when they arrived, but they seemed fine and installed well enough. They failed some time during the summer of 2016. 2 of the 4 I installed completely split. Blerg.

Re: Parts: Known to be Acceptable
Anyone have any experience with the BusDepot "Febi" wheel bearing/race/seal kit? I'm specifically looking for the non-composite rear bearings, but if they're good I'll order the fronts to match.

Re: Parts: Known to be Acceptable
Have they ever arrived?? I need to replace the 4 year old boots so I am looking for some good long lasting parts like the OEM ones that were 30 yrs old before they failed.drober23 wrote:I just ordered the Rockford CV Boot Kits #339-22 directly from Rockford. 1-815-962-1411

Re: Parts: Known to be Acceptable
Rons Transaxle
1009 Broadway Ave
San Pablo, CA
510 235 6263
rebuild, modifications, parts for automatics
presumably gearboxes transaxles as well.
Good Guy=Ron=Owner
I bought parts,in 2008. Used. Very fair prices. When a circlip groove completely fractured on a fw/reverse clutch drum he sold to me, he sent a replacement nocost+shipping. It wasnt stripped and contained a clutchpack with moderate use. Certainly good, so that compensated shipping.
When I rebuilt my 003 auto, Ron had a decent fluid pump, and everything else I needed to put my trans right as far as non consumables. Thrust bushings.
Fluid pump gear fragged on a shakedown drive, way out of town. Never rebuilt or had this auto failure before and had a full plate rehab on the bus to do, so the whining warning went unheeded.
It telegraphed warning whine which I Lucas( Hope) TransTreatmented. Till it let go, and ceased to make drum grabbing pressure.
Master kit I sourced someplace else, name which escapes me. Torque converter I had rehabbed at some funnycar place in LI. should have an addy somewhere for east coasters. That service should be available regionally.
That's about all I can remember off the top of my head.
Where was his online review? I just found him by deduction. SF Bay Area = Most VW lovers/Hippies/highest density of solid VW recycling.Ron used to ride Bultacos, we found out we shared dirtbike halycon days, but on opposite coasts.

Re:
10 years later I ask the same question. It is almost time. Colin what do you think of your Rancho transaxle? And what is the deal with certain bellhousings not permitting a socket on the engine mounting bolt head? There seems to be a cast boss in the way.hambone wrote:For future reference: does anyone know of a rebuilt transaxle that is of comparable quality to original German?
The other option is German Transaxle in Bend but they are spendy with a lesser warranty.
I want to do this ONCE.
