Is my CV Joint still useable? Video.

Post by amishman » Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:39 pm

First time CV Joint removal as I had a tore boot. Removed joint and have cleaned parts for inspection. Not really sure how to tell if this CV Joint is OK to still use. No apparent cracks in any parts. Some "shiny" areas in where the ball rollers make contact. I am guessing that is normal from age??? Anyway, I have posted a short video on my web site hoping you can look at it and give me a idea if the CV Joint is OK to use. Video about 11MB in size so my guess you need to have a normal high speed connection to use which many have these days.

Anyway, this is from a 1973 Thing.

Thanks,

tj

Your narration had some dramatic background music as I have been listening to Philip Glass The Illusionist.

The CVs are fine. Place right on left and left on right for new wear surfaces. Cleanliness is critical.

Thanks,

I guess I will need to play with it so I better understand what you just said about right on left and who is on second, etc...

As the torque from the transaxle comes through the axle, it progresses as follows. Outer grooves through balls to inner grooves to shaft to inner grooves through balls to outer grooves where red is the inboard CV joint and green is the outboard CV joint.

Your old CV positions will have the worn side of the grooves as follows:
Right axle inboard outer grooves will be worn on the CCW side as you look at the joint bolted to the transaxle. The inner grooves of the inboard joint will be worn on the CW side. This is because the outer grooves are the "driver" and the inner grooves are the "driven." Now, if you simply install that drive axle assembly on the left side of the car, now the inner grooves are the driver and the outer grooves are the driven (their new position is outboard left side) and you have new fresh wear areas. Practice your spatial relations skills and get back to me, did this make sense?

I can see where you are going with it. Only issue here is I am only doing this one axle for today as I need to get the Thing on the road and will plan on a complete CV and Boot service later on.

So, I guess what I need to figure out is, if I just turn the axle around so the CV Boot that was closest to the drum is turned around where I connect it instead to the tranny and the other side to the drum so they are swip swapped. Does that in essence do the same thing as you mentioned. You had mentioned "right" axle before so not sure if you meant the only way to achieve the new wear areas is to swap axles from left to right, etc...

And I guess I need to go use the dictionary for "spatial relations skills" as I have no clue what that means. As smart as I can be, the dumber I can become. <grin>

Er nope. The transmittal of torque will harrass the same surfaces even if you swap ends.

OK, well for now I will just get er back on. When I do a complete job of all boots, etc.... I will do the axle change from left to right.

Thanks for the tips.

If this thread is resolved, I'd like to hijack it a little.
So....I've never greased my CVs. How often are you supposed to do that?
