3 rib trannys
Are there any 'gotchas' that I should now before I buy a used 3 rib transmission for my '73 bus? Besides, of course, not know the condition of the trans. Are there any compatibility issues between the different years? etc.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: 3 rib trannys
It is an 002 which bridges 1968-1974 model years. It needs the bell housing with the supports introduced in 1972 for the Type 4 engine. Other than that, you should be good to go.chitwnvw wrote:Are there any 'gotchas' that I should now before I buy a used 3 rib transmission for my '73 bus? Re: 3 rib trannys
If needed, I can swap the bellhousing off of my existing/nonfunctioning transmission that is currently on the '73, no?

Is the input shaft longer on the T4 variants as well? That looks like something that can be swapped as well...

The 5 ribs have that sharp edge that also gave rise to the name "pyramid" transaxle.
