79 Bay smoke and fumes

Although Harvee isn't back up and running yet (have to wait for tax to have some money - damn, kids are expensive! :evil3: ), there are a couple off issues for which I might have found the cause.

When the engine was running, occasionally there would be some smoke in the engine bay, and if I had the heater on with the blower, my CO monitor on the dash changed color.

Looking at the engine to take photos of the missing air distribution flaps for the people who rebuilt the engine, I noticed this:

With that gap, is that possibly the cause of both issues?

Why don't you have the flaps? You have to have the flaps.

Because, it would appear, the person who rebuilt the engine failed to refit them.....

That was one of the jobs Colin helped me tackle one year, as mine was missing the flap as well.

Missing flaps doesn't mean smoke in the engine bay though....

I was thinking more about that piece of tinware forward of the fan housing (by #2 spark plug) not seating well

Yes, and the prior comment holds, these do not cause exhaust in the heat.
You need to check the exhaust system from the manifolds on back to the tailpipe.
Does the tailpipe clear the rear bumper?

Weather forecast is for some nicer/warmer days - high 40s, possibly even into the 50s by the end of next week, so maybe I'll be able to get under him over that weekend when bug-wife is looking after the bug-let.
