Hiya All,
70 Bug - Stock condition.
I redid the brakes when I got this car. Part of the brake job was replacing the front drums. I bought what was available at the time, Italian aftermarket.
Everything was fine for a while (maybe a year), then I started getting a scratchy, rubbing sound (just exactly like the shoes had worn thru and were scoring the drum) whenever I started out in the morning. This sound completely disappeared after two or three stops. I pulled the front drums and everything looks great.
Anybody have any ideas as to what is causing this phenomena?

Hey Bill & Rob,
Thanks for the relies.
Truth be told the rust angle had occured to me also. Makes sense given the symptoms. But.....................
I get the scratchy sound every morning. Would enough rust form overnight to do that? If so, are the aftermarket drums to blame? I've been thinking about doing some business with Kiefernet who is offering good used front drums.

One overnight? Seems kind of soon.
Is it outside or in a garage? Sometimes poorly ventilated garages are worse for a car than parking outside in the rain.
Maybe it is the aftermarket drums...There is a big difference in the qualities of different steels.
For example: I read recently that one of the Italian automakers used poor quality recycled Russian steel for the bodies and they rusted out in a couple years.
Maybe it's bad steel in the drums?
