Re: Crosscut Saw from Hambone Saw Works
Not real clear on this; did you make this saw? What kind of steel?

Re: Crosscut Saw from Hambone Saw Works
Blank was specialty made from high speed bandsaw steel, then I set and sharpened it. So I didn't make it, just turned it into a functional saw. It took 4 days of full on work; very difficult to work with such hard material.

Re: Crosscut Saw from Hambone Saw Works
Bob, there is some fascinating and enjoyable writing going on here. Last year I was hit with the "typewriter" bug, and now you turn me on to these guys? Luckily the palm trees around here don't need much clearing…
Beautiful saw work, too.

And this. Thiiiiiiis is what it's all about, isn't it?True to form, it doesn't have the same quality and heft as some of the larger and better made saws of the era. But compared to modern products, it appears top of the line. Funny how historic perspective distorts. Junk, we live in an era of junk. The only way to get real quality is to find the old antiquated "junk" from another era.

Haha true, Ian!

I accidentally got into an Underwood Noiseless from '22 a few years ago. Damn those pre-war "economy" machines are nice. Probably shoot me a PM if you want to really nerd out… ;)chachi wrote:wait, robbie, you're into typewriters?

I have half a dozen of them, including my grandfather's Remington 5 that had in China in the '30's.

Re: Crosscut Saw from Hambone Saw Works
i have gone through many american pre-war machines but i eventually settled on "western" german post war machines as my scribes of choice, two torpedos and a beautful two-tone voss. i find they have the same snappy response and build quality of a certain german automaker we all know and love...

Re: Crosscut Saw from Hambone Saw Works
Looks like I'll have to camp in Oregon again next summer; I'll bring my scribe this time. :D
Except I haven't had a chance to practice splitting any firewood. You guys can laugh at my "city-boy" technique all over again!

Re: Crosscut Saw from Hambone Saw Works
Speaking of splitting firewood, I was considering ordering the #2 Hudson Bay hatchet from Council Tool. They make a standard version and also a premium model, the Velvicut, which is a beauty, but pricey at 160 bucks. Any other quality camp hatchet suggestions?
