Camping and Racing at Road America (pic heavy)

Post by sped372 » Mon Aug 12, 2013 9:34 am

Spent the weekend camping inside the carousel at Road America. Had a great time with some good friends and even though it rained a bit on Sunday, the rest of the weekend featured beautiful Wisconsin weather.

The weekend included the American LeMans series. There were also Porsche GT3 cars and a few other oddities like the Deltawing present as well. I am not a racing nut but enjoy cars and machinery well enough that the event was still well worth the trip.

One of the greatest things about the Road America venue is that you basically have free reign to walk, hike, bike, and wander just about anywhere you like. It's a 4+ mile racetrack through the wooded hills of Wisconsin so there were plenty of great places to watch the action from.

Wandering the paddock as night fell was a treat. It was fun to peek in and watch the crews make adjustments and repairs right in front of you.

If you ever get the chance to go, I would highly recommend it.

great pics, thanks for sharing!

a friend of mine from here in Eureka also grew up in Wisco (we went to HS together) and flew back to visit family/friends and to see this race weekend to.

that first picture of your bus and the other close by - what's that thing powered by? my buddy sent me a shot of some busses from a distance and I noticed that one has a big radiator (i think) poking out the back.

the was the first time the Grand Am series and ALMS series raced the same track on the same weekend. racecar porn for days....

that Level 5 car you have a shot of - those guys are from Madison! they always seem to have the most over the top setup in the garage (though questionable methods of funding their team.)

it's a shame that the ALMS event yesterday had to end under caution. I think they could have gotten that car out of the gravel with enough time to run a few laps if they really tried. all in all a great race though. it was nice to see the Viper finally find a good balance with their big arsed V10 powerplant up front

My buddy did a 2.2 Subaru transplant in his (the yellow) '77. He runs the radiator right where the engine lid would normally be.

I think it will be one of those lasting memories, waking up to the sound of an echo-ey loudspeaker announcing the start of warmups and the screams of cars doing hot laps at the perimeter of the campground.

Great pics (as always). Brings back good memories - went to many Road America events in the 80s - good times!
