Yer driving your creds, pal. No need of NASA docs. "Hey, officer! Wanna see my drag link?"

Hmmm...yeah that could be a problem.
Seriously, maybe tell them you are an author researching your book...show them a photocopy from the publisher or something of the book?
Not the same as a NASA entry permit, but it's true and might save some middle-of-the-night explaining.

Maybe make up a badge for the B.F.R.O. And say you are hunting for Sasquatch!

(I was watching Animal Planet today and they do exist. B.F.R.O. stands for Big Foot Research Organization)
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Yeah thanks there, Sylvester.

Am currently heading north into the icy netherworld known as New York in a Lexus Loaded With Boxes of art and a cactus and the skimpiest of tool boxes. No camping in a Lexus this time, there is no room.

Beauty. Blooming, too. There's gotta be a back story there somewhere.

Or maybe it's part of the creds. "Officer, I'm sleeping here because they won't let my bring my cactus into the hotel rooms."

"Officer, that's not a cactus, it is a Nicaraguan hybrid pot plant, it's an amazing high, like waking up in a huge glazed doughnut and looking over the city of Boston Kreme."
