The next time I'll go together with the camper to the pinnacles :salute: ...

But:
We are planning to go to South America without the camper because it would be much cheaper regarding shippings and borders. In order to get down there we'll have to drive to Galveston, Texas, to get Herbie on a vessel via RO/RO going to Cartagena, Columbia. We'll probably leave the States by mid-January and be back in April.

During the last weeks I worked a lot on our Bug: I think I took the engine three times apart but it is still the very same engine! Although I replaced the axle arms including the pins. I put a stronger ignition coil in and I changed the distributor (including cap and finger). My old fenders in the back were quite rusty (Colin probably remembers that), so I got new ones. I also had to get a new starter - the original one fell apart couple days ago. That was one of the reasons why I also had to get a "new" fly wheel - I got it a local junk yard. And I went to an alignment shop where they got Herbie back in line. The original pedal shaft was worn out too. And after more than 75,000 miles I also put new brake shoes on and checked the brake cylinders. And of course I got new shocks, tires, gear and break fluid, motor oil, front wheel bearings and so on.

You can find photos of the work I've done on our blog: http://www.dlv.co.at (Just klick on the photo "Herbie's World Tour"!)

Just 1,200 cc and 34 hp are pulling our camper all over! Without the camper I get 34 mpg - I think that is great if you think of the technology they created before World War II. :thumbright:

And never forget: Ferdinand Porsche was an Austrian :thumbleft:

The first vw I bought was a six volt 1200cc powered 1962 Karmann Ghia. Always I was just shy of 40 mpg. I bought it in 1979, my young buck car. Good times, many a tale, and the start of my learning to do the work myself.

You learn to keep a driving momentum, and to hit the bottom of those hills at the highest possible speed, delaying the inevitable shift down to third gear to climb them as long as possible.

Herbie Rides Again

Post by Herbie 1963 » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:23 pm

Tomorrow, Saturday, we’ll leave Ridgecrest, California, early in the morning heading East through the entire Southwest of the USA and Mexico in order to ship Herbie from Veracruz to Columbia, South America. Down there we want to follow the so-called Pan-American Highway to very bottom of Chile.

We’ll try to keep you posted on our blog while we are on the road exploring another part of this world in our Volkswagen Beetle from 1963. Just 34 horses will hopefully lead us across continent number five on our trip around the globe. We made so far more than 76,000 miles (122,000 kilometers). You can always find the current total mileage and our location on the right side of our page.

We hope everything goes well and we return to North America safely!

Bon voyage! Wir wünschen eine gute Fahrt in den Süden! Come back and tour North America!
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Hey there,

Herbie arrived in Mexico safely! I tried to post as many pictures I can on our travel blog

www.HerbiesWorldTour.com

Hopefully you enjoy them!? :thumbleft:

We love to be here in Mexico again. There are still so many VW Beetles - they produced them right here until 2003 - as a "1600i" of course.

Our next step is to get to Columbia in South America. Herbie is going by ship and we'll have to fly.

Air-cooled 34 horse power regards,

Domi on Herbie's World Tour

See if there are any jobs for me down in Columbia. I do old Volkswagens and love good coffee.

Okay, right on!
But aren't you afraid of Colombian drug cartells?

We are until Wednesday in Veracruz, Mexico. Latest next week we should get Herbie in Colombia and then heading South...

Hey,

This week we got Herbie back, but unfortunately somebody misused him in a very awful way. :pale: We are almost finished with all the repairs. If we are able to get a new regulator by Monday, we'll leave Cartagena, Colombia, on Tuesday, heading Southwest towards Ecuador.

You can find more about our odyssey on http://www.herbiesworldtour.com
