Pulled my front brakes apart to clean and lube. Everything apears to be original as far as pads, bearings, seals, and grease. Everything looked suprisingly good so I cleaned it all up in the parts washer and re packed the wheel bearings, hit the rotors with a wire wheel to get the surface rust off, and re-installed everything with new brake pads. I also hit every zerk fitting I could find with the grease gun.
The difference in the drive was amazing. No more low rumble, rough feeling binders on my feet, or squeeky squeeks.

Next on the list is the rears.

First planned trip is on March 23rd. Meeting up with Central Coast VW's for their annual Meet In The Middle (MITM)
Sold a little Fiat 850 I aquired wich will provide funds for new tires next week.

Did a little work last weekend.

Finally installed new KYB GR2 shocks in the rear and took care of an exhaust leak.

Hauled a Chevy to the machine shop for a buddy. Just as i'm pulling into the parking lot this happens..

:angryfire:

After getting that mess cleaned up, my wife and I had to go meet with out Tax Lady. We also decided to visit the parents since they are in the same area.

Total mileage on Sunday was 200 miles. My parents live in the San Gabriel Valley and I live in the High Desert, so there were plenty of hills to conquer.

Here she is after we got home. She wasn't even breathing hard. 65-70 the whole way, up hills and down. She also did not use or leak a drop of oil

Front Brakes are done, still got stuff on order to replace the rears.

Tires were installed yesterday and she drives like a dream.
We found a majik scrub pad that takes the water oxidation off like wiping mayo off the counter ;)

Pics for you picture junkies ;)

First coat of compound. You can see the front compared to the door.

After a serious scrub down today.

Almost looks as good as the waxed area!

Saturday I loaded up Toaster and took off to Refugio State Beach to camp with some fellow VW people. Sunday morning we packed up and cara-dubbed to Meet in the Middle near Solvang. Back home later that night. Roughly 320 miles round trip. Toaster ran extreemly well and I had a blast hanging with the crew from Central Coast VW Chapter.
I'll post some pics a little later... still uploading.

I wish I was able to afford an itinerary visit. Since the move I have been handing the paychecks to the wife so she can figure out how to juggle all that stuff. The little money that does flow through my pockets is from the small repairs and parts swapping/selling I do outta the garage with my VW buddies, but you are always welcome to come by for a social visit. Still have plenty of space to park a Bus overnight and can supply a pretty nice garage if you ever needed it. But it seems you prefer polishing heater boxes in the AZ sun in your skivies :flower:

About a week after I got home from this trip I pulled the Bus into the garage to finish cleaning her out. The next morning I found this....

I have all the parts to fix this, but seems no time. I'll probably start when I get home later this weekend and just work on it a little everyday after work.

Still have not had the chance to deal with my rear brakes. I did manage to find a few things Toaster was missing..

It took me a while but I finally got one of the drums off of Toaster. The original bolts took a few days of PB Blaster treatment before I could get them off. Everything seems to be pretty original in there.

 Stuff on the top of the wheel cylinder is pretty gross :pukeright:
I do see the leaking seal under all that mess.

That is advanced. Glad you are there to clean it up. Order your shoes carefully. There was a narrow window of "late" width with "early" cross bar style of ebrake.

Hello Everyone,
Sorry I haven't been on much, been busy driving my Bus everywhere!!

Meet in the Middle in Solvang, CA

Visiting my Brother in Gaviota, CA a couple weeks later
Image

I ended up adding a roof rack and converting the interior to a camper. :thumbleft: The wife and I love camping in her.

Currently the engine is pulled so I can deal with a pesky oil leak at the oil cooler and to have my heads checked out.

Image

I have a bunch of other projects in the way currently. My poor baby got pushed to the back of my yard :pale:
Image

I'll be back in it soon. Leaving tomorrow morning for the Treffen (driving Booger) so nothing this weekend.
