On I-5 in northern california, Bertha seemed fine flirting with 70 mph, a bit faster here and there. 1641 dp. Stock tranny.

After the first change you get used to it.
75 in the bay today, 4100 rpm, for once it was fairly pedantic, wondering if 97 is possible as CK claims...

What a blast!
Was Truman hanging his head out the winda?

I've been to 90mph but mine's "special". Cruised at 80mph almost all the way back from Anacortes a few weeks ago. Didn't seem to mind one bit. But again, mine is "special". :joker:

With the old engine I could do 70mph easily but it would start to blow oil in the upper RPM's.

That's it, enough right there, no commentary needed.

Does Bill still have the original transaxle and RGB's? He'll reach warp-speed if/when you upgrade the rest of the drive train.

I was just thinking that Truman is Spiffy in dog form. You two should meet someday. Now is Lola the dog form for Copilot?...I'll have to think on that.

I don't believe it, not for a minute. Not even downhill with a tailwind.
Numerically.

The circumstances of tailwind, downhill, good chassis all would have to line up. I would never go past 80, BC, and I don't know what I would be good for right now. . .

Hal gifted me a tach today, vintage early 70s with enough dust and patina that it looks like it's been installed for 30 years. Bolted in place, hope it works. It will be interesting to see how 4,000 RPM translates into reality.

Never hit more than 77 or 78 in any of my buses, pedal to the floor...unless it was down hill or had a good tailwind.

Had it up to 70 to pass semis going to Badger Creek, but man did it sound wound out. I would like to find out how that translates into RPMs.

Come on, Hambone, let's:

Tires 185 or 195 14's ? About 820 revs per mile = 820 rpm at 60mph.

Ring gear is also doing 820, right? Now multiply by your pinion: 5.375.

That means your pinion and lower mainshaft is doing 4,400 rpm at 60 mph.
Multiply the mainshaft by .82 your 4th gear ratio = 3,615 rpm at 60 mph.
That is the rpm of the input shaft and clutch disk and engine! at 60.

At 70 mph, you travel 1.16 further in just one minute. 4,200 rpm.
That is not engine busting. It is slightly past the early Type 1 cooling system's ability to shed heat in demanding circumstances. The doghouse Type 1 engine was happy enough at 68 mph, to be blessed with a factory certified 68mph top/cruising speed.

Or sumpin,
Colin

I *did* manage to convince Hammy that the doghouse is A Good Thing when he was building this engine, even though he *did* waffle about it for awhile.

The future entertainment value of Hammy second-guessing himself will make that $5 tach worth every penny.

Thank you, very interesting. My brain gets tongue-tied with formulas. How do you know them offhand? Or did you look it up?
Well the tach no worky. But the light I soldered in does! Hooray!
$35 Autozone special mebbe. Bus is now wired, ready to go.
