The head is warped fairly badly -- there's at least twice a "points gap" worth of air between the middle of the head and the straight edge .. I didn't bother measuring just how much gap there actually is because it's irrelevant unless I try getting the head machined. At which point it's the machinist's problem. :blackeye:

I'll be back out working towards putting it all back together in a little bit. Came in to warm up for a bit and eat something .. and find my scotchbrite disc to clean the head & block mating surfaces with. Whee!
Before any deck machining, ask for a nice 350* bake with ambient cool-down.

Will do .. when I get around to it. "new" head is going on the engine in a while -- couldn't find my scotchbrite disc, had to go get another one at the FLAPS. Fortunately they're only two blocks away...

Great .. it's raining. :banghead:

OK, prep the head and a couple other little things, then cook dinner for when Mary gets home. Finish with the Bus tomorrow when the forecast is for No Rain. Finish Cabriolet too.

New head is as prepped as I can get it this evening. Cleaned all gasket surfaces, replaced cam seal, installed spiffy adjustable cam sprocket, installed new-style timing belt tensioner stud, installed-and-loctited new shoulder-less studs for the re-usable steel-core rubber valve cover gasket, blocked unneeded coolant & oil pressure ports on end of head, installed spark plugs.

Came inside, preheated oven to 350*F .. for cooking dinner.

Head on & torqued, valve cover on,timing belt & covers installed, cam timing advanced 2.5*deg from stock to put torque lower in the RPM range. Came inside for a burrito break, back out in a couple minutes to install manifolds, connect hoses & wires, add coolant. Taking a bit longer to reassemble than it did to take everything apart but not by much...

Sounds like you're making progress.
I just got home from working with Paige on her engine.
Cheers.

And .. DONE. (posted real quick to get the timestamp)

Installed manifolds, wrestled with intake bellows, changed oil & filter, fought with stupid spring clips on the stupid 4-to-1 "toilet bowl" exhaust manifold that I only used because it was laying in the garage at the time. Connected all the hoses & wires, replaced crispy crunchy crankcase breather hose that was apparently too close to the exhaust, hooked up the throttle cable, charged the battery. Crossed my fingers and hit the key

It starts! Adjusted the ignition timing, tweeked idle speed a bit, let it run up to operating temperature, shut it off. Need to let it cool down & burp a time or two, plus check (and possibly change) the oil again. Huge white clouds coming off the exhaust and out of the tailpipe -- got a bunch of coolant in everything when I tried to start it after the radiator replacement. Also need to get a shim kit and adjust the valves (overhead cam), there's a definite clatter in there .. like hydraulics that haven't pumped up, but it's a solid-lifter engine. Might see if I can bribe Rob (my parts connection) to do that job and let me watch -- that way I know how to do it next time the motor needs a valve adjustment in 30,000 miles. :bootyshake:

Motor sounds good otherwise.

Congratulations! For us mere mortals that would have been a multi-month project (at least!).

Cheers and happy driving!
