Blew the head gasket. Badly. Might've warped the head too.

Overheated (badly) on Thursday night coming home from IKEA. Crack in one of the plastic radiator tanks, plus one hose junction blew apart -- redid the lines & installed new radiator (with better mounting & hose routing) Friday and Saturday, filled the cooling system. Couldn't get it to start, smelled combustion gasses in the coolant reservoir. Pulled the #2 spark plug and coolant game gushing out of the hole. Almost as much coolant in #3, a bit in #1 & #4. Blew it out as best I could, sprayed some oil down the cylinders to prevent rust, called it a night.

It had overheated once earlier this month when the thermostat failed in the closed position. Replaced the t-stat and refilled the cooling system and everything seemed fine except I kept having to "burp" air out of the system. I'm thinking (now) that the gasket started to go at that point and what I was burping was combustion gas. Plus the temp gauge was getting to 230*F then drop to 150*F when the t-stat opened .. I suspect the higher pressures (from the higher temperatures) were an added bit of stress that the hose junction couldn't handle. Crack in the radiator tank was a stress fracture from the mounting arrangement...

On the plus side, the head gasket is cheap, the head bolts are cheap. It'll give me an excuse to install the adjustable cam sprocket I picked up awhile ago, maybe re-work the exhaust with a better-flowing manifold if I'm feeling ambitious. Gotta get something else going for a daily-driver while the Bus is down though.

Got your number someplace. Right now I need to get the Cabriolet up & running so I've got something to drive -- I've got a new fuel pump for it, just need to put it in. Once that's handled I'll tear into the Bus and figure out if it's just the gasket or the whole head that needs replacement. And the other stuff I might decide to do since I'm taking the engine apart-ish...

Ouch that hurts Hal, fingers crossed only the gasket is needed.

Ahhoouuccchhh, that blows. (Pun... Sorta intended)

I guess the "baking the rust off of the exhaust" has it's price.

Let me know what I can do!
Maybe it's time for that "Type4 conversion" I've heard so much about.
Yeah get the Cabriolet done already! Geesh already.

Got the head gasket, head bolts and other associated stuff needed for the job at Halsey last Friday. Worked on the Cabriolet and got it started and apparently running decently, but I can't find my 30MM socket to torque the axle nuts on the front hubs.

Picked up another head at Pick N Pull yesterday afternoon -- not warped, looks to be fairly low mileage, and it's a JH-code 1.8L so the valve sizes are the same. w00t. Still haven't torn apart the Bus engine to see if *my* head is warped, but having a spare on-hand isn't a bad idea anyway...

Engine is torn apart, took a whole 1.5 hours to disconnect everything and get the intake & exhaust manifolds off the head, then the head off of the block.

The head is warped fairly badly -- there's at least twice a "points gap" worth of air between the middle of the head and the straight edge .. I didn't bother measuring just how much gap there actually is because it's irrelevant unless I try getting the head machined. At which point it's the machinist's problem. :blackeye:

I'll be back out working towards putting it all back together in a little bit. Came in to warm up for a bit and eat something .. and find my scotchbrite disc to clean the head & block mating surfaces with. Whee!
