Tapping an 8mm hole for a 9 mm stud

Post by chitwnvw » Sat Aug 12, 2006 7:44 pm

I am going to be replacing my 8mm exhaust studs with 9 to 8mm step studs. Once I get the studs out do I need to drill the hole first, or can I just start tapping? If I do need to drill, what size bit?

Scott at GermanSupply was amazed that I had a 9mm 1.25 thread pitch tap. I actually have a 9mm 1.0 thread pitch tap also, other than bragging how great my tools are (not), my point is that Sears has a very nice 14 piece metric tap set, that has saved me before. It goes from 3mm .5 thread pitch to 10mm 1.5 thread pitch.

If you have the same Craftsman kit I have, I think the little fold up tips paper has a chart on it with sizes. My kit is about 5 towns away in my garage so I can't look.

Don't have that little piece of paper, hope I didn't "oh, I don't need this" and chucked it. Maybe I'll try a google, just thought it might be common bay wisdom.

So I got my new studs, got the proper drill bit, drilled out the holes, tapped them, and six came out great. Two of them, on cylinders 3 and 4 on the center of the engine, those two hit a spot where it got a little hard to turn and I tried to remove the tap to see if anything was wrong and it didn't want to come out either. So I wiggle and waggle and when I get the tap out it had bands of aluminum around it and some of the new threads had come off. Those two wiggle in their holes and one can only have three or four turns holding it.:smt086

Is this the time for a timesert? If so anyone know someplace that will overnight or 1 day it?

Or maybe a 10 mm to 8 mm step stud?

Timesert with the 8mm studs. I don't think the 10X8 step-studs
come long enough for our application here, but you could ask.

Let me know if you find an interesting answer to the bent studs conundrum. Let me know if the final timesert install goes smoothly.

Enjoyed meeting you and your s.o. and the charming garage and conversations therein.
