That makes sense Slowlane...I would assume the owner would take a NEW pic of everything installed...makes you wonder if it's still all in pieces.

I wish there were some interior pictures, middle seat or Carat table? Engine? Come on, sellers.
Good price so long as that window pinhead rust through at the window has not devastated the interior unbeknownst to the seller . . .

I think you can go wrong.

Look at that first photo:

There is no way those wheels and tires can work. No way at all. Me thinks that photo was shopped, so the seller is trying to pull one over on you.

We need to be so... so... skeptical these days.

I don't think the photo was shopped...think he just laid the tires up against the bus to see what it would look like; if you look at the other pics you can see there's no hub caps...maybe he was thinking of lifting it and putting bigger tires on it... who knows? That pic is the only one where it isn't sitting before he parked it in the spot where it ran until didn't. :) I'm guessing he took that pic when he was still using it...doesn't look as neglected in that pic.

You are right, need to approach any bus with heavy skepticism and a critical eye. That said, project buses with a project price tag are hard to find...I've seen rusted out carcasses with no drive train and they were asking $2k. This one might be worth investing time into....might not... don't know until you talk to the owner and go look at it. :) For me, the hunt is half the fun - looking for that diamond in the rough...the hidden value or opportunity.

Yes, if you live in Atlanta this is potentially a great deal.

However, unlike folks living in Cali, the PNW, or down in the south, folks living in the midwest or the northeast, rust free, or nearly rust free buses are extremely hard to come by. And if you live in the rust belt, to buy one from that far away you have to figure in acquisition costs. That $3k bus in ATL would cost someone in the midwest/northeast probably $4k whether you flew in and drove it home, or had it shipped. That $1900 vanagon that you could potentially pickup for $1200- $1500 may not sound like such a bad deal If you've got $2500 extra jingle in your pocket to fix it up.

FWIW - The seller posted one stinking picture.... for all we know the other side could be caved in, there could be no interior, could be filled with bondo from collision damage (it doesn't look like OG paint to me....) maybe they are trying to hide something. :)

I posted these local listings, because someone local may benefit from them. They may look like turds in the eyes of people who live where rust is nearly non-existent, but in the midwest they are potentially diamonds in the rough. Around here the market is: $2k if it is non moving, $5k - $7k if you can get it on a tow dolley on it's own power, $10k for a bus you can drive home (locally). $15k plus for something in decent shape that you would trust to drive more than 300 miles.

... and maybe have forum members in these faraway places to offer an inspection for the long-suffering rust belt buyers.

Seems pretty straight...although it would be nice if they were to show the "2.0" engine upgrade...wonder if it is a punched out 1600cc, or a transplanted type IV engine. I'm guessing the latter .... did they even offer the 1600cc with an automatic?

It's a '73, so it came with a 1700 type IV to begin with.
Upgrading to a standard VW configuration 2.0L would have involved changing out the crankshaft and con rods as well as installing larger pistons, so not a simple upgrade. Unless they simply stuck some fat pistons in there and called it a 2.0L.
At least they don't claim that it has a "Porshe" engine. :blackeye:

Not too bad for a '73, but unfortunately, I am spoiled to death on the later layouts . . .

Looks legit on the dealer's web site, despite the transmission type mistake....

I loved the '77 Dasher hatchback I used to have as a winter rat, but it was a gasoline model. It was that awful champagne edition silverish green. My wife called it the green weenie. Drove like a little Mercedes, with the big steering wheel to match!
