I am getting predictable, I guess.
But sometimes I see fevers of engineering "enhancements" overtake people, in lieu of careful consideration.
A cold engine that reads lean but smells rich? How about condensation of fuel? It needs to warm up all the surfaces in the intake combustion chambers and exhaust system before the sniffer can give you an accurate reading. Your nose can smell a pool of gasoline, but that gas won't burn until it is a combustible vapor. The sniffer isn't going to read the fuel condensation but your nose can. If you have cold running issues beyond the first few minutes, sure, investigate, add metered air via the AAR, play with a TempSensor II resistor, but don't get too excited and start dumping unwanted gas into the engine when it is cold. Muir was half right, you know.

there are factory bus engines with a hole in the plate. i can provide the part number if you like, so no throttle plates are harmed.Amskeptic wrote:BEFORE YOU ALL START DRILLING OUT YER DAMN THROTTLE PLATES, how about if we let your poor engines break in?
the low idle is an issue with certain engine combos and we've seen the same behavior too, even after the engine has loosened up. i believe it has to do with the camshaft characteristics as they relate to the factory injection system.

But how does a hole in the throttle plate increase the cold idle speed without also increasing the warm idle speed?
I have not heard anyone complain that they have reached the limit of the idle adjustment screw.
Am I missing something here?

Anyway, the first trip is successfully under the belt. Only about 200 miles but it ran great. Had to stop and dial in a couple more clicks towards rich on the potentiometer to get the temps into a more comfortable zone cruising on the highway at 65 but other than that no issues. Mileage ended up at just over 15mpg. Not great, but for a fresh tight engine running on the rich side, cruising at 65 and climbing a few hills, not bad either. The engine now has about 500 miles on it. Feels good to back on the road.

Scott, these particular throttle bodies with the hole in the plate aren't available anymore are they? Is this problem you've seen on warm idle also or just when cold?germansupplyscott wrote:there are factory bus engines with a hole in the plate. i can provide the part number if you like, so no throttle plates are harmed.Amskeptic wrote:BEFORE YOU ALL START DRILLING OUT YER DAMN THROTTLE PLATES, how about if we let your poor engines break in?

So here we are, after this fine drama unfolded. How about a report? Lay it down, 1976 Road and Track style.

More than I wanted. Quoted $235 but for the price I paid for the header I want it to last. They do one interior coat and two exterior. Should last quite a few years hopefully.tristessa wrote:.. so what'd that set you back, if I might ask?
