On a road trip - gearshift is buzzing
Hi Folks - decided to go camping this weekend. About 200 miles into my trip, i noticed that there was a buzzing coming from my gearshift. It seems to only happen when I am in a gear and without any load (under acceleration and deceleration there is no buzz). Happens in all gears. If I put my hand on the shifter and gently press it towards me, the buzzing stops. Noise is for sure coming from front of bus - not rear. I also notice that 4th seems a bit harder to find. Does this sound like a shift linkage bushing going bad? Any issues with me keeping my hand on the shifter to pull it towards me so I can cruise w/o buzz? Thanks for your help (while you are at it, make the rain stop too!).

Re: On a road trip - gearshift is buzzing
Having a similar issue. Colin was just here and we adjusted the rear shift coupler and the stop plate. I used to be able to find a quiet spot by moving the shifter a few centimeters. Now it buzzes/rattles most of the time in first and second. In third and fourth I can find a quiet spot by moving the shifter left and back until the RPMs get higher.

Re: On a road trip - gearshift is buzzing
4th gear selection difficulty may be worn/loose front bushing. Rattle mitigation under load, may be engine/transaxle shifting up (acceleration) and down (deceleration) which dampens the shift rod against the shift rod bushings.Mr Blotto wrote:Hi Folks - decided to go camping this weekend. Worn main bearings can amplify vibrations that cause rattles, here, the symptom is nice and quiet when the engine is cold/cool, getting worse as it heats up.

Re: On a road trip - gearshift is buzzing
OK so I made it back home safe an sound. The buzz/vibration does NOT seem to change with engine temp (it does it right after you start it up). I have always had this odd harmonic vibration thing with the engine in a narrow high RPM band - seems to be getting louder / more pronounced as time goes on. Colin - you have me paranoid about my main bearings.

Re: On a road trip - gearshift is buzzing
Not to worry . . . the Type 4 engine is as tough as they come. Over time, they get looser and louder, but they continue to function. Save your paranoia for oil light flickering at idle. That is the better indication of developing problems. All of the 2.0 engines are a bit thrashy in the lower ends with that 71mm stroke.Mr Blotto wrote:OK so I made it back home safe an sound. Re: On a road trip - gearshift is buzzing
No flickering oil light, except for a second or two at start-up after a day of sitting. So a new shift rod bushing might fix it?Amskeptic wrote:Not to worry . . . the Type 4 engine is as tough as they come. Over time, they get looser and louder, but they continue to function.
