I Hate Oregon (Gas smell again)

Last year I replace all the hose connections and the rubber elbow and finally had no gas smell driving. We drove down to Portland before heading out to Maupin and the stupid Oregon gas jockey ripped my rubber elbow by forcing the nozzle into the filler. I told him to be careful but.....I have been smelling gas since then. Today I finally had time to pull things apart to find this! Repaired it with a bit of black RTV hopefully this with fix it until I can get a new part.....

I hate Oregon and their stupid law that a idiot has to fill the tank instead of me.

I have had my share of showdowns with Oregon gas jockeys.
I start with a commiseration that the law is the law, but I get sort of Federal Constitutional on them regarding how a man's personal property is sacrosanct.

I bought a new elbow at Halsey a couple years ago, had the VW logo and part number on it and everything. Finally installed it earlier this year, and while I haven't had any gas station jockeys tear it, filling has become a slow-going pain in the ass. Gotta hold it Just Right to get the pump to stay on the low setting, otherwise you're standing there for 20 minutes while it trickles into the tank...

I will normally just take the pump from them as I tell them if it's not done just right the pump will fall out and or spill fuel. They never really put up much of a fight. If they do get it in there at the correct angle without forcing it (if it doesn't go in easy just push harder right?

) they always stick it on high flow which inevitably results in a nice wash of fuel down the side of the bus so as they walk away I click it down to the slowest fill notch.

Here's the stuff I used. It's a *very* snug fit over the metal pipe from the filler elbow and the tank inlet .. used about a half-tube of KY and spent a good hour and a half wrestling and cussing before I was done. I put clamps on both ends but I seriously doubt it was needed .. I don't think I could get that stuff off if I *wanted* to.

If you drive a diesel, you can pump your own fuel. I understand that miss-fuelling incidents prompted this exclusion.

I've had my filler ruined by Oregon pump jockeys.... Not fun to fix at all. When I travel to Oregon, I explain why I am hovering over them with my camera phone. They think I am nuts and generally let me do it myself.

Now that its fixed and fuel smell free I'll pump my own gas in Oregon first raising a stink to do it instead of getting the stink afterwards.

After several attempts at curing the Ghia's fuel smell I have finally found the cracked overflow hose replacing it with a heater hose. I can finally totally fill the sucker and make hard left turns without being overcome by gas fumes. Now onto fixing the horn after locating the right year parts. Sometimes I can't believe how butchered some mechanics put together stuff with miss matched parts.

I can't accept the use of the word "mechanic" here.
Mechanic: A worker skilled in making, using, or repairing machines, vehicles, and tools. Colin is a mechanic, and a thoughtful one at that, in addition to being a sage, sensei, teacher and many things I'm certain I'm not even aware of. To be a mechanic is to be in great and glorious company, with people who care, share and are disciplined. The folks you are describing are not mechanics, in any sense of the word.
