Help! Need Exhaust Crossover Pipe for 79 Bus Exhaust Syst

Post by flyawaydesigns » Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:54 am

Help!! We are looking to find a good used Exhaust System Crossover Pipe (039-251-497A) for our 1979 VW bus (2L, FI, Calif Smog). The original one has a crack in it and we need a replacement part. Internet searches have led me to believe the Crossover Pipes are NLA. Does anyone here have one they would be willing to part with for a reasonable price, or do you know someone who may have one??

Let us know....

We need to get this repair done to get Bob back on the road!!

Thanx

Give these guys a call:

http://www.interstateusedparts.com/

I was there several months ago to get a crossover pipe for a 78. They had some 79 pipes that looked to be in good shape.

Well, after some digging, we discovered what we really need is the "Federal" Crossover Pipe....NOT the Calif version after all.

Sooooo.....anyone know where I might find one of THOSE in decent shape?

If you or someone you know may have one...please give me a holler.

The crossover is still on the bus right now, and I haven't seen the damage personally, but the mechanic we use says the crack is in a place that, in his his opinion, cannot
be welded. So until I get it off the bus, I won't really know if it is repairable....I was just thinking a good used one would be less hassle to deal with.

It is getting more desperate out there. Can you weld the crack? Replace the pipe section between the cast iron flanges?

Yes it is....as these are NLA now, there seems to be a need for a good aftermarket replacement part. But until I can get the crossover pipe removed and inspected, I won't know if the one we have can be repaired. I understand the crack is near one of the exhaust flanges in a very tight spot that a welder may not be able to reach. Will be dealing with this next week...so in the meantime I will search for a used replacement if there is one out there. If ours can't be repaired and there are no used ones availaible, I may just look to build a new one from scratch.

Thanx for your help!

There are no tight spots when it is all disassembled.
Like here in Texas at the end of a dirt road . . .
