Ok. How about Sunday? Does 10:30 work for whomever? Adam, Mike and Mike, maybe Joel? Just let me know how many. We are looking at a 2 liter engine stripped down almost to splitting the cases. A few measurements of rods and crankshaft and taking the case halves to be evaluated and then I don't know just what is next. We'll wing it from there.

Thanks

Joseph

I wish I was there. I am suffering Engine Rebuild Withdrawal.
Give me two weeks of sunny 70* and I'll be right there.

Mike B. and Mike K. and Adam met at my house to continue to tear down the 2 liter engine. We got it down to the case halves and agreed the crank and cam bearings were in pretty bad shape. Hope that Mike K. will be posting pics soon. The next step will be taking case halves and crank, camshaft, and bearings to A1 automotive machine shop for evaluation. It appears that all the bearings were original parts meaning the engine had never been rebuilt. Yay.
The plan is to rebuild the engine totally stock. Gotta have this engine ready for summer of camping.

Thanks guys

Joseph

Talking to dad and we got thinking on the condition of the crank/cam bearings. What could have very easily happened is that the worn bearings allowed for beating to occur, so that the cylinder is going past top dead center position. That may the reason why the edge of the cylinder was slightly gnarled up, and the nicks have been in there for a while.

Also, the more I think about it the more you can totally have at those oddities in the burn chamber, and just remove them so that you don't have to worry about marring up your next cylinder.

Yo yo yo MENTAL Q-TIP! How about giving the engine a wipe down before tearing it apart? Then you don't have to see globs of dirt fall into the crankcase and pass out cold when you take the cylinder barrels off?

Maybe Mr. Dude was working on the head, his buddy asked him for something, he set the heads down, and the grease picked up a partial washer?
Washer could also have dropped down in there through some strange reason?
Who knows, the good thing is that at least on first inspection, cylinder walls looked good.

As for what you guys - especially Colin - are and art not seeing, here is the low-down of what we have found;
* All bearings were found to be STD. :)
* The center main bearing is good on the non-cylinder axis, burned (bluing) at the half-way point, and heavily worn (copper) on the cylinder axis. Thus why I said it was probably beating. Mental will be taking in all the stuff to the shop to have it looked at and see what is recoverable.
* The bearing that I'm holding is the worse side of the cam bearings. Needless to say it's dead as hell. The other side was marginally less dead, as it was missing smaller chunks.
* The cam itself feels worn and ripe for replacement, as there are edges/divots developing on the lobes.
* The crank/cam helical gears on the other hand look good, nice even wear.
* The work gear for the distro mating to the worm gear has heavy central wear to it.
* The crank oil seal on the transmission side was good! It had nice seal to it...
* ...Although several dabs of JB weld have been used on the case itself, on the flywheel side, presumably at a transmission service time to seal up oil leaks once and for all. Not a bad thing, just an observation.

Work teams conclusion:
The engine was simply an old engine that was long due for a rebuild. More to come!

On Next Episode... Mental finally gets a bus that runs like a top! :D

Colin. I wish you could have seen the engine before I spent hours cleaning it and I started taking parts off. Lots of scraping with screwdrivers, puttyknife, and a whole lot of simple green and wiping. The floor was a mess.

Adam. Nice summary. I am eager to receive the report on the parts condition.

See you at the Lab.

Again thanks to Mike B. and Mike K. and Adam for there help and input.

HI! I wish I could have seen it, too!

By the way, two points,

a) distributor drive gear is "swiped" by the brass gear, it always looks worn.

b) I forget

Colin :shaking2:

(oh yeah, if you change the cam, which I think you are doing, yes? please save your old cam gear, as it works with your case dimensions. Do not let knuckleheads or the distracted remove the old gear or install it on your new camshaft. It *has* to be done carefully and correctly and it *has* to run true)

Hi Joseph,
Have you had time to call or take anything to Hall's for inspection?

Last night I reread all of Fancy Pants' rebuild followed by Misszora's rebuild thread. I misplaced my Wilson book but will look for that tonight and study up once again. I also have the Bentley but I do not have the Bug me video which I found helpful when we worked on Paige's engine.

Maybe a newly renamed Joseph engine rebuild thread is in order?
