@ Engine: Carbon build-up? Steady oil leak, so that's... A ring check. How are the cylinder walls doing?

@ "Washer": Ahha, so that's what the notches are in the top of the cylinder. Man, that blows.

Had to look that up.
So, how are you gonna fit it? :P

I have seen it installed in two bays as it just slides in but you need a adapter flywheel so it can start.
Looks like blown rings to me.

Talking to Hal and Adam this am(Fri.) and with my description they both seemed to think the engine might not be in the best condition. I'm waiting have Hal take a look.

So, if it's not then complete rebuild of one or both of your engines?

At this point of time it's inspection of the other lower to see if it's usable.

I'm withholding any statements or ideas until I get a chance to physically inspect the pistons myself. Didn't make it over yesterday or today, obviously not making it out to Joseph's place tomorrow (Lab) .. might try Tuesday if the traffic eastward doesn't look too bad...

Found a bunch of grime on the outside and what seems like too much carbon on the inside.

But the real problem seems to be this metal that has welded itself here:

Head gaskets were used and are unbroken. An oil ring looks questionable, tho.

With all of that oil, also check valve guides. Look in all intake and exhaust ports.

3 of the 4 pistons don't look bad, the scuffing on the sides of #4 isn't horrid either but there are worrisome dings on the piston crown's edge. #4 also has an (IMO) excessive bit of missing fins on the upper top of the cylinder.

The scuffing is horrid, so are busted fins, engine needs to go down to the next level, case with rod hanging out, check each lifter bottom and camshaft lobe, check each rod clearance with plastigage, and end play too. If camshaft is not unduly worn, if lifters are not flat or cratered, rod clearances are all under .005" and the end-play too, you can . . . build back up with new piston/cylinders and have a relatively cheap slightly sloppy rebuild for the next 40-50,000 miles. But if anything has veered to the wear limit, rebuild the whole thing while the parts are still available.
