What would be awesome is to develop an engine building collective here in the Portland area. A sort of time bank, tool library and mechanical commune type deal. Let folks like Hambone, that have the skills, make some cash while spreading the business risk out. We have good people and a growing need for quality help in keeping these aging rigs on the road.

Hopefully "Portland Volks Folks" will evolve into this, it was my dream all along. I guess I shoulda told youse guys...
Problem seems to be, most folks here are 9-5ers with little free time left to dedicate to side-wrenching. Kids and families need us.

Location can be an issue, too.

For sure! Maybe less so if the effort was to focus on engine rebuilds? I have the space for that, but not the skills. I hope to stumble through a build for myself, but will never likely be worthy of payment!

We'll build ya a good one! Not gonna be cheap like GEX or JC Whitney, but it'll run a lot better.

Ain't got the longblock yet. Ordered it from VW Offroad/Headflow Masters a couple weeks ago. Just got the muffler and piping and clamps and heater boxes with new lever kits. Almost ready I hope.

Hey Hippie! What did you end up buying? If you don't mind me asking how much was it total?

Sure Sly, it was the Headflow Masters longblock. 1600 SP stock but balanced according to the order. $1950 shipped.
It's built up except for the damper and tailpipe (had to fit thru the laundry room door into the garage) and the 2" paper/aluminum air hoses because they would get bashed up bolting it in.
It's sitting in the garage on a roller cart. Took forever to strip all that tin and exhaust stuff for painting. I went with a new exhaust and heater boxes but still had to strip off all the storage primer to take the high temp. paint. Baked it all in the oven except for the muffler that wouldn't fit, so I used a 400,000 BTU propane torch.
Gonna get help jacking it in on Wednesday.
This may be my last Bus engine. Getting too old and sore for this.

We do! Balanced crank plate-to-pulley, balanced rods, balanced Mahle pistons w/ Grant rings, Dual relief case set up for doghouse, bored, thrust cut and decked. New VW SP's are $300+ a piece, but worth it. Give the shop a call next week some time. 541-344-2251, talk to Miles.
