Shroud photos?

Post by 72Hardtop » Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:43 am

Could someone post some decent photos of the fan shroud split as well as put together with the flaps in working order? I'm in the process of cleaning the shroud up now and having some pics will help greatly in making sure I've got it back together properly. Thanks.

I've got it soaking in the tub right now after having spent some time scrubbing dirt/grime/grease from it. Using warm/hot water and laundry detergent to break the grease down. Seems to be doing a good job of it so far.

Any tips as far as getting the white pitting/corrosion off the exterior of the shroud? How about painting? Not looking to make it show ready since it will be driven just make it look nice and orderly.

The only way I have found to get the fan shroud nice and keeps looking nice is to have it powercoated. It fills in most of the pits and becomes very smooth.

Thanks Bley,

I'm not looking to go that far since it will only end up looking dirty/grimy after several thousand miles/a few years of driving. What I'll likely end up doing is just d-greasing it real good and giving it a couple thin costs of aluminum colored heat temp paint.

Where did you have yours done at? What was the cost? I may go that route when it comes time for the next full re-build.

I place just south of Seatac airport off the runway. As for cost it was $250 for a pile of air cooled VW tin parts and fan shrouds off several engines. That way is the cost is way down and I have a stash of parts ready to go on the next engine. I have done the intake runners, plenums etc too.
I like the powdercoating as it really lasts vs rattlecan paint and you can spray it with degreaser and it doesn't come off, really easy to keep clean.

Do a quick and dirty like I did .... Sandblast followed by two light coats of clear engine enamel.
