*sigh* Bus will not go ... only rev.

Post by Maz804 » Fri Jan 20, 2012 5:45 pm

After finally bringing my bus to life after troubleshooting a fuel issue, I think my clutch went out.

This has never happened to me, so I wanna make sure it's clutch not tranny. I still have pressure on the clutch pedal.

I can move the shifter through all the gears while running the motor. When I stick it in 1st and let the clutch go, it just revs and I hear clunking/rattling sounds in the back.

I can shift the lever through all the gears while the motor is running and NOT PUSH the clutch pedal down.

It makes a rumbling sound and disappears when I push the clutch pedal down.

What does this mean? Broken clutch disc, or broken pressure plate, or broken throw out bearing, or broken tranny? Good thing I have a spare tranny... :blackeye:

Go under the car and see if you dropped a driveshaft. Make sure they are where they belong with all their bolts accounted for. Next, remove both rear wheel hubcaps and have someone start the engine, push in the clutch, engage first gear, and look to see if the axle nuts move with the wheels remaining stationary. Stripped axle spline with that one. If everything is stationary as it should be, you have an issue that requires an engine pull, and a likely transaxle rebuild. We can build good gearboxes with all that we now know, so pony up the cash and get a good rebuild and enjoy that car. A gearbox build is only three new car payments.

how long did it sit? parked on dirt? did it drive when parked? sounds like cv, but could be the clutch has rusted to bits. he can shift without clutch, while it's running.

I went back over to check up on it today since it's not raining. The pasenger side axle where it connect to the tranny is all fubbed up. Some thing broke. I think I know why. When I got my bus it was lowered so we raised it back up 2 clicks evenly on both sides... That side must have been lowered only 1 click so it's always been a little wonky. I bought a dial indicator and I need to reset the spring plates.

Where can I get an axle?

I will check Halsey Monday. I didn't know that would be something Napa would carry. Hmm.

Two clicks? What is two clicks? Set your spring plates for 23* +/- 1* and keep an eye on your CV bolts until you pass your own trust test.
Nice looking bus in your avatar, is that the one that lost its go?.
