if you can get the case splitter tool that goes in where the oil pump is. makes it so much easier.

UPDATE:
The oil pump made its way out thanks to help from Hambone. Nothing broken! :-)
Shepski has a case splitter and we discovered a couple more hidden (read - oil and crud covered and two mystery-as-to-their-purpose) bolts holding us up. It split beautifully.

We found little metal shavings along the bearings of the crankshaft and inside the case and a piece of gravel sitting on one of those bearings!!! Whoever put this engine back together did a sloppy job. Boo!

I'm going to do some cleaning and then bring in the case, guts, heads and the rest of the moving parts to a machine shop. I was going to go to Bearing Service but Hambone thinks the machinist at Dan Hall is still doing his magic. Has anyone been to Dan Hall lately and can confirm this?

Here are some pics from today...they're from my phone but I do have up close and personal ones of the gravel damage. I have to empty a few gigs of photos & music off of my computer first before I can get those to you. maybe later this week?

Ready for splitting!

Engine moving made easy! I didn't get it but I want one. :-)

Well, what do YOU wear to an engine splitting?

John to the rescue with case splitter in hand.

Don't know what purpose the long nuts serve but they needed to be removed - holding up the splitting process.

Success!

You got a wall of shame? Cool. I need to send you one of my chewed up main bearings from putting in the wrong oil pump that grinds against the cam gear.

First time I've ever seen or heard of a case-splitting tool. Pretty slick.

I was addicted once, long ago. Now I'm some sort of religious fanatic. "Party of 1?"

Do I get a pin or something? ;-)

So Hammy, do you think I should give the Dan Hall shop a call or is it sort of a I-need-to-have-connections type of thing now?

I had this discussion with Shepski about taking the engine into the machine shop but wanted a rundown of what I need to ask for and what all I need to bring in from all who have done this.

thank you!

Call them, ignore the message, leave a message of your own. I have heard spotty reviews of the other local machinists.
Bring in:
case
heads
crankshaft
camshaft
rods
You know what to tell them. "Fix my shit!" They will inspect and tell you what is usable. Tell them you are broke and on a tight budget.
Are you reusing your pistons and cylinders?
Hey if you buy a buncha stuff, go to Halsey and ask for Johnny. Tell him "Bob sent me", order what you need and he will likely give you a discount (but not always! But worth a shot.)

Thanks. I love telling people to fix my shit. ;-)
The pistons and cylinders look pretty good - I'll get them checked for sure. I've been getting the carbon off the cylinder heads - no cracks!!! Shepski recommended bringing in all moving parts to get balanced as well.

Yep, internetism. Treat it as either an expression of utter amazement, or utter happiness.
