A New Heart For Miss Zora
OK, I've been putting this off long enough. Tomorrow I'm going to tear down the spare engine that has been in my back yard (under tarps) since summer. I am going to be rebuilding the bottom end and use Miss Zora's top - am I saying that right? So I need to bring the core into the machine shop - do they split the case?
What else do I need to bring in? It has been recommended that I get new cylinders and pistons.
The machine shop I'm thinking of using is Bearing Service Company in NW Portland. If anyone in PDX has a machine shop that they know for fact does excellent work, I'm up for more options.
I have a feeling this is going to be like the first time I took MZ's engine out - lots of posts and questions and hand-holding. Hope you're ready!
No seriously, I wouldn't have the confidence to tackle this without you guys.
Thank you for supporting me and the love of my life, Miss Zora.

Re: Spare Engine Rebuild
They'll do what you pay them to do....If you want to split the case, they certainly wont charge you more, if you bring it in this way. If it was me I'd split the case and see what I had 1st. Maybe it's good to go with some new bearings.
Take care,
Rick

Re: Spare Engine Rebuild
Hmmmm...not sure I'd know what I have even if I looked at it.
I hear bearing are hard to come by for T4 engines these days. I'm putting my energy into thinking positive though - MZ has gotten to some amazing places and I want to keep her going for years and years.

Re: Spare Engine Rebuild
Jake Raby got a big shipment of Mahle main bearings in not too long ago. I bet he could get you what you need.misszora wrote:I hear bearing are hard to come by for T4 engines these days.

Will be following this thread actively... just got my Tom Wilson in the mail and started reading last night. Going to tear into a seized spare T1 motor this winter to cut my teeth since I don't care if it's ruined or not. Tackling my 65k since last rebuild, hovering around ~100 compression CB000076 1700 T4 next winter I hope. Wanna baby that early case engine with lots of love. Lots of learning to do!!
Good luck! Post photos!

Re: Spare Engine Rebuild
thanks! haven't even started yet. sorta had a realization that I needed space for parts in my basement which meant cleaning out an area which meant taking the Styrofoam I had set aside to recycle had to be recycled but the place that I normally recycle is under reconstruction so I had to go to another place and realized I was almost out of gas and still needed to drop off the Styrofoam peanuts and go to the bank so I went ahead and did that as well....*SIGH* just got back home and NOW will get back to work on tearing down the engine. sheesh!!!

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Re: Spare Engine Rebuild
Slowly but surely...need a hand with removing the flywheel though. I have a flywheel lock in place and a socket but don't have the strength to moves those bolts. I have a big bottle of Lucky Lab Super Dog in the fridge to share with the person(s) who can help me get that bad boy off the engine. whew! gonna need a long soak in a hot bath tonight!

Re: Spare Engine Rebuild
Almost 6pm...calling it a day.
Calling out to anyone with air tools (or arms of steel) to help get the flywheel off and loosen the alternator adjusting bolt (allen head) AND I would really appreciate a couple sets of hands to get the engine off the ground and onto the engine stand so I can finish removing stuff. Just don't have the strength to do it on my own - and you have no idea how frustrating it is. grrrrr!!!
So yes, the Super Dog is still here but I'm thinking I could splurge for some more hop & malt beverages to knock this out as soon as possible.

Re: Spare Engine Rebuild
I've got a distributor-install-and-start-the-motor appointment with the Cabriolet sometime tomorrow, plus a trip with Hammy to a couple of junkyards in the AM, but could probably work some time to pop over to your place if you're gonna be around.
