Interstate 5 just sits there nice and straight and smooth. Your steering likes it. Your tires like it. Your failing outer front wheel bearing likes it. Your tired third gear synchronizer loves it. The clutch cables is relieved by it. What is not to like about Interstate 5? Did you mean that the other drivers sometimes seem not very friendly, like they are always in some kind of hurry??

Good thing too, I spend a lot of time on them. I used to think I liked the secondary roads, but interstates are actually further out in the countryside than the ever-increasingly-developed towns with endless big box stores and traffic lights. I can pull off an interstate onto a ranch access and be nowhere right quick.
Too bad that is no longer true so much for I-5 through the California agricultural valleys, and I-35 through Texas is a beehive of insane driving.

I-5 from Williams, CA to Redding, CA is the stretch I find most boring & annoying. Probably something to do with travelling that stretch at least twice a month (once each direction, frequently more) for the first 19 years of my life, running between "home" in Santa Rosa and "cabin/summer home" in Weaverville.

I-5 is indeeeed fairly quaint in its own way.

Personally I prefer 395 ever since I've driven it. That is a fantastic drive.

Great minds think alike! We're leaving our north suburb of Seattle on Wednesday, August 21st arriving in Anaheim Sunday the 25th. Disneyland (Paradise Pier Hotel) is cheaper Sunday through Thursday which is what determines the travel dates/times for the entire rest of the trip. Boring as compared to the 101 drive. For most the 5 would not be the wise choice in part due to the far steretches between towns and parts availability if an unlikley mechanical event occurs. Afterall these cars aern't getting any younger and too many owners still skimp on fixes/parts. There are also more grades as opposed to the 101.

I did the 5 drive back in 2005 from LA to Seattle & back. Left on a Friday (afternnon approx. 2pm) and arrived on a Sunday (around lunchtime). I was taking my time as well. You should have enough time. Try to time your arrival in LA during off peak traffic times which are roughly (5:30-9:00AM and 3:00-7:30PM) Monday thru Friday. How long you planning on being gone? Start/finish?

This is another reason we're timing it the way we are. We plan to overnight Saturday night in a little burg called Buellton which is north of Santa Barbara on 101. North just enough to save $$$ on a motel. This will allow us to sneak into Anaheim Sunday morning/early which I think by all accounts is the best possible time to attempt this.

You could also camp at Gaviota State Beach just north of Santa Barbara. They have a pier there and you can fish as well. It's probably 20 miles or so north of SB.

How did your trip go? Details?
