What maintenance is required for swing axles? It's been a long time...

Did a little reading, the only maintenance is to check the boots for leaks occasionally....
Hell I'd rather have to do that than deal with CVs. I guess you get better handling with the CVs though.

Hay Hambone, don,t worrie about the cvs, done them myself but last ones on my '69 bus - Colin did and I helped a bunch- fun messy stuff but not so bad.
I drove a '55 for the best yrs and sorry I ever sold it for $700.00 to some dudes in LA but life happens to us all. Do get a bug and not a super, front end problems, I looked before I bought this back up Honda I have and would trade it in a heart beat for a pre '69 beetle. They are the kind!

Sorry Barb but I have to disagree. Don't be a-feared of the Supers unless you plan on doing some brush-pushing campouts like you do with the Bus.Elwood wrote:Do get a bug and not a super, front end problems,
Yes, the frontend is prone to shakes, sloppiness and the dreaded "Super Beetle Shimmy". Replace the (rotten, worn rubber) bushings with urethane, install a strut brace and you'll have a car that'll out-handle just about anything short of a Porsche .. and in fact, a car that shares it's overall suspension design with the Porsche 944, which was one of the best-handling cars to ever come out of Stuttgart.

Supers are good cars too, just a bit more complex. Drove a '73 for a few years as my daily driver, even took it camping a lot, handled just as well as a standard on the backroads.
Midwest salt tends to rust that front pan area though, causing the whole front end to collapse. Didn't happen to me but I've seen nice cars go to the yard because of that.
