Cheryle just called. Ghia is coming home on the hook. Transmission is stuck in reverse.

Two cars down. I'm going to cry.

Apparently it popped out of first at the light as it has been doing, and then when Cheryle put it back into first it went to reverse. My hope is that it's a linkage problem, but it's attached at the transmission. And the old transmission wasn't popping out of first. Oi!

Check the coupler under the back seat, it could be screwy. At least it's a Beetle trans, they seem plentiful around here. Check CL and the wrecking yards, they are pretty durable beasts.
Sorry you have to go thru this! Now don't get all weird up there, cut off from society...

Here's another one, could be stripped by now though:

livin the dream, remember? Might not be the trans, who knows. Doesn't sound good, however.

Checked coupler right off the hook. Attached. Fine. Shift lever travels about but coupler doesn't. Hoping the issue is at the shift itself. But not going there tonight. The old transmission is in the shop, but it had last priority now shifted to top. Sigh.

It was the stick shift. The shift tube bushing had crawled up the shaft out of the shift tube guide. Pushed it back and it is shifting again. I'm going to pull it back apart and clean things up and relube and hope it holds until I can get a new bushing purchased and installed. Of course if anyone wants to pick one up for me and come up for a visit, I wouldn't be averse to that plan either, otherwise Monday I'll pick one up and get it installed Tuesday.

Bushings eh, Panicky Pete.
Didn't think that would prevent you from shifting. Now I know.
Hell you already have the old trans in the shop you knew replacement day was coming soon anyway.
Erin out of town, kid duties or I'd possibly drive the 10,000 miles up there.

Without the bushing, the rod dropped in it's bracket and the ball on the end of the stick shift came out of the cup, caught the outside lip and shoved it into reverse somehow. Fingers crossed it doesn't recur before I can get the new bushing in there. Then I get to look for the "cover plates from both the frame head and the front body apron" to remove in order to get the long rod out of the tunnel to get the new bushing into place. Looks tres annoying, especially if I end up dropping it. The fun never ends, but what a relief it wasn't the actual transmission.

10k miles works out to about 42. There is always tomorrow and Sunday. But no worries. Back to filing casting flash out from between the fins on the new cylinders.

You need the clip too, or just the bushing? Not sure I'll make it, too much Other-Than-The-Shed stuff to catch up on around the house .. with Mary gone for a few days I can work on something Other Than The Shed without her bugging me about When Is The Shed Going To Be Done.

No worries. Gretchen is running. Even if it pops out again it doesn't take that long to put ball back in cup. Not driving until Monday. It looked like the clip was there, but it couldn't (shouldn't) hurt to get a new one. Enjoy your day both of youse!

I might brew beer today.
