'69 Beetle at Copart Auction

Post by hambone » Tue Feb 19, 2013 12:16 pm

I went to see a wrecked Beetle today, to be auctioned tomorrow morning:
http://www.copart.com/c2/onSaleResults. ... CH_RESULTS

It was a relatively solid car overall, albeit with rusty pans. They were on the cusp of "gone"...
Otherwise all the danger points of old Beetles were OK, including a good headliner.

It would take between 500-1000 bucks to get it stabilized. The front apron is a bit worrying, pushed forward a couple of inches on one side.
Mechanically, who knows. I found a parking ticket from a month ago, so the car hasn't sat too long. But it has not been maintained well, and all systems would need attention.

It would be a hell of a base for someone, but I'd not pay more than a couple hundred myself. It did seem like a car that wanted to GO'
.
Have any of you had experience with impound/wrecker auto auctions? It felt 1/2 step above a wrecking yard, and I had to stand around forever just to sign in, much like the DMV. Everyone moved at a detached snail's pace, it was very weird.

You *can't* go wrong with that car.

The main concern is that '72 Super in my garage that I JUST (just) started to take apart to fix some body work and prep for paint - luckily it's mechanically dialed in. That will take at least a month, and I need to be able to get vehicles in/out of the garage. With my weird linear driveway, I can stack 4 cars along but they have to run!
I did like that car, but perhaps timing is everything. How difficult is welding in floor pans? Seems pretty basic.

Eh it's up to $600 already, people are crazy.

It was fun to watch the live auction online. It went for $700, a bit on the high side for a salvage titled car that doesn't run. It was the same situation the last auto auction I went to - beater Beetles that sold for 2x their value. Must be the economy, everyone looking for steals.

A paltry sum for a bit of history . . . you need to start living and breathing the magnificence, my boy! How else are you going to get that dancing light in your eyes?

I wish I had a trust fund for wayward Beetles...but I must be practical, funds are very limited and I can only really take on one project at a time. Besides the PB fumes are giving me that dancing light.

New paint and windshield and then back on the road. I will have to sell it though.
